I’m considering building a music man/super jazz hybrid tone monster. The initial idea is to buy two quad coil humbucking pickups and set up the electronics for every possible combination. Each pick up would have a five way switch to choose between north coil, south coil, both coils in series or parallel, or off. And then a two-way switch to choose between combining the output of each pick up in series or in parallel.

A couple of questions I have:

Is this a viable way of combining the two pick ups electronics wise?

is it even worth making all of these two options available?

IME, while it is a great idea to have all the options available, in reality you'll pick one that works for your sound and then never change it.

If I was doing this, I'd make a temporary control plate that will allow all the various options, and then when you have settled on the one(s) you like make a new one that just allows that/those.

Thanks. I think that thought was probably in the back of my head. I currently have some EMG pickups that allow some of this tonal variety but I don’t really care for the differences that much, but I also think I’m not a fan of these particular pickups in general, so I’m struggling to know what the issue is.

I guess this is what sterling did with their HH models… should have got an HH! 😭

If you are making all possibilities available, I do support the idea from @BigRedX . If you are intereated in loading the pickups with other coils, you can use simple switches. If you want to blend coils so that they keep their original voicing, consider active mixing of the coils. If your EMGs are battery powered, mixing can be done with passive hi-Z components, but I recommend using Noll Mixpot or John East blending between pickups.

One hundred possibilities is a great idea, but most of the options are useless. At least in band context. You will most probably use two modes, like single and series humbucker. There you can hear the difference, and the sounds are useful.
