I have an old GK MB150 combo and its great. I often use an 8ohm extension cab with it to use the extra little bit of power. Is it possible to just put in a 4ohm speaker and not use an extension cab?
You could, but it won't be as loud or deep as using it with he extension. You probably won't notice much difference betwen the combo with 8 and 4 ohm speakers; it won't double the power but will just add a couple of dB.

You'll need a very specialist speaker to work in that small sealed box and I highly doubt you'll find one, or get any benefit from it being able to draw more power from the amp if you do. Note that adding the extra cab (assuming they're near identical) is increasing your sensitivity by 3dB, increasing the max power from your amp by ~2dB, and doubling your excursion limited power handling. All a 4 ohm speaker will do is increase the max power from the amp but it's the other two factors that make the real difference.
