status s2 vs stealth 2

Hi all, Just wondered if anyone could offer some advice,

I have been using an s2 6 string headless for several years now (thru necked version) and am thinking about getting another bass.

The s2 has an awesome fundamental tone with real focus which i REALLY like but i have never been able to get a decent slap sound out of it. There doesnt seem to be many over tones (although the harmonics are strong) Even with new strings it seems a bit mediocre. I remember trying a 6 string stealth years ago through a big warwick rig and it had so much clout for the slap sound but cant remember what the finger style sound was like.

Currently using bergantino ip112 with the HT112 extension so im fairly sure its not the amp limiting my sound.

What i want to know is.....

Do the new stealths have more top end sparkle to get that real "thunk" when slapping but at the same time have the real focus for finger style. Anyone had both and can give me a comparison? Was thinking the stealth 5 headed so i can have the longer scale. What about the different pres in the stealth compared to the s2?

Anyone tried any different pickups/preamps in an S2?

Thanks

Dave

Interesting one!

There are many variables as noted - the wide range of pickup/preamp combinations that Status have used over the years for just the S2's will alter the fundamental tonality of these instruments and again, having owned many Statii, certain basses had what I'd call a meatier slap sound than others. The Stealth basses tend to sound `glassier' than the S2s due to the all-graphite construction - on saying that, the pickups/preamp fitted will alter the sound as per the S2s...

Personally, I'd give Rob Green a call and see if he has a Stealth in stock; I'd then arrange an appointment to visit the factory, take your bass and rig down there and A B them. He might be able to tweak the circuit to suit your playing preferences!

Cheers!

Hey nick, great to hear from you. (it was you who frequented the status yahoo group, possibly even started it? Havent been there in yonks!)

Didnt you start up a bass company, hows that going?

Thanks for the info. Im in london now so much easier to get down to colchester.

I was probably going to have a look at the circuit myself and put some of my uni degree to work so i let you know how it went. I think the mid band wants a tighter q and slightly less gain and it will be perfect.

Take care

If you have one of the modern S2-Classics, as opposed to an SII, S2 or Empathy, the ideal slap sound is with the mid toggle switch set to "flat" or in the middle of the three settings. Boost your treble & bass and there you go!

Yes, the Stealth as Nick said is a little glassier, it's also got more of an older style "scooped" Status sound with the two band preamp. But don't let that put you off. I have a similar setup on my all-graphite Streamline & it sounds amazing!

thanks rich, yes, its the s2 classic circa 2000/2001 the first headless 6 they made (certainly of that model maybe full stop) and theres an engraving on teh electronics cover! My collegue ian had your kingbass for a bit, which i liked a lot, ridiculously easy to play, altho the slap sound seemed to disappear a bit but i think thats an amp issue. I played drums on a motown show with him on bass.

Ill certainly have another play with the eq when i next change my strings. (theyre due now, just finished a 55 show panto in stoke and pleased to be home, and they weren't new when i started!)
