an audition

Wont bore you with details, but why audition someone if drummer and singer cant be bothered to turn up and the 2 guitarists only know 3 of the songs they sent me to learn? 10 in all

And when they play them I don't even recognise them?

they did mention that they were fairly new to playing (but had said 4 years of playing which hints at some sort of skill level above complete beginner) but not the case

AND  they play at open mic gigs!  WAAAT!!

So after the songs  i was honest and said not for me and good luck to them (which i meant)

Next time I will heed the beginner bit a little more methinks

Sorry if this overlaps any other thread,,   but just needed to rant (a little)

Which just goes to show that an audition is a two-way street.

It also shows why I would (now) never take the slightest interest in joining a band that wasn't already gigging and had some video somewhere to prove it!

Or the members have credentials you know or can check on, if it’s a new band being set up.

Regarding the OP, I wouldn’t say playing at open mics makes it a no-no. Hell, I do it myself sometimes 🤗. Maybe it’s the context they’re done in, and if it’s the only place they play at.
