Good evening, all...
Here is my own, personal, view of the compositions presented in the monthly BC Composition Challenge, in randomly chosen order. I hope that at least some will be inspired to give the works a listen, and perhaps vote for their favourite. All the pieces can be heard here...

First the violins, then the violas, followed by the cellos, vamping out the chordal rhythm, giving us a baseline. The flute brings its merry melody to the table, daintily skipping over the strings. This is echoed by the oboe (or is it a clarinet..? My old ears..!), and spreads into a counter-melody over the flute. We go deeper, as the flute harmonises with the strings, who have decided to bring their own melodic contribution. The pace quickens, as the melodies liven up still further. The soloists vie for position; their partners cede the space for them to shine. The underlying vamping has continued all this time, lending a solid, gracious structure to the embellishments and flourishes. A more solemn note is injected by slow strings and woodwind, bringing us to a moment of drawn-out suspense, leaving us with the chordal vamp to melt away in peace and tranquillity.
The initial raison d'être of this Challenge was to inspire and draw out compositions. Not necessarily bass-orientated (but not excluded, of course...), and this piece shows just what talents we have on the forum, in more fields than bass-playing. Delightful, altogether appropriate to the picture, delicately constructed and entirely coherent; what more could one wish for..? The only 'downside' is that there are other entries, all of great quality, albeit in very different veins. Is this the winner..? Dunno, but whatever beats it must be damned good, that's all I can say..! Top-notch, kudos, respect. Thanks for the joy imparted through this. I can still see the rabbits playfully tumbling over the grassy knolls and meadows.
