[sharedmedia=core:attachments:174869] Good evening, all...
This short review concerns an 'hors concours' freebie for those interested in the BC October Composition Challenge. Not intended to be included in the voting, it's merely a sort of 'teaser'.. All the pieces can be heard here...

... and the 'Freebie' here ...

‘Failed Mission Report’, from Dad3353...

Mechanical chimes, as from a musical box, with a clockwork rhythmic rocking to and fro and a brisk arpeggio, fade in. A breathless, dis-embodied Voice informs us of the sad state of affairs. Each phrase separated by a pregnant pause, as if utterance was a great effort; even painful. There is much weariness and resignation in the tone. The news is not good, apparently. The relentless, chattering chiming continues unabated, the cheeriness contrasting with the gravity of the speech. Becoming increasingly laboured, the Voice, having given all the information deemed relevant, fades away with the melody. The music remains stoically positive, belying the Voice's note of hopelessness.
We're not told the circumstances leading up to this report, one guesses that there is some social upheaval concerning the youth of the time, a change, apparently, for ever, and not for the better. The Old Regime has lost; it is not without irony that the Giant bringing this news has been brought down and defeated by the Children, even smaller than those to whom it is reporting. The end of an era, a finality, a full stop has been reached. All bets are off, a page has turned. The mission has failed.

Have a nice day

Douglas
