1996 Warwick Corvette - passive to active electronics

Hi, I have a 1996 5-string Corvette. It is amazing to play, but I have always struggled with a noisy output. Local repair shops say nothing is wrong with shielding, wiring etc, but recording engineers always complain when I take it into studio.
The bass has passive MEC pickups and preamp. The question is: would I get rid of the noise by replacing the preamp, the pickups or both with active versions? I've got an extra set of active pups I bought off ebay, but I'm wondering whether to go ahead with an active preamps - either MEC, Bartolini or Aguilar.
Or should I forget working on the guitar I've got and get a different one?

Any thoughts? Thanks.
