This is not always true... it depends on the teacher.
I've come across very poor exponents of their craft who profess to teach... and I mean VERY poor.

Which is why I wrote 'good teacher'! :P It's a very good point though, as discussed above. Recommendations are the way to go if poss. If not, some instructors will offer a free trial lesson.
