Power Supply Hiss/Hum

Hello - hope this is in the right thread etc... I gigged last night and noticed a very audible hum/hiss in my signal that I've never noticed before. My chain is this:

Bass > Boss TU3 Tuner > Rusty Box > Boss Line Selector* > amp

*The line selector is only for volume cuts going between songs that are played finger style or with a pick, and also using the boost channel on the Rusty Box which drives the signal pretty hard.

The Rusty Box has it's own power supply and I daisy chain the LS off the Tuner which I use a 9 Volt power supply (the one that came with the DC brick that I also own but don't use right now)

When I noticed the hiss I moved some stuff around etc but put it down to the 9 volt supply powering the Boss stuff. I ran the Rusty Box alone and it was dead quiet so it's got to be the power going into the Boss stuff (I reckon at least)

I know nothing isolated power and earths and also that stuff so if anyone can help me that would be appreciated. Should I get a better 9V supply or buy a voodoo lab or something, or even use batteries in the 2 Boss pedals?

Cheers

If you are suspicious that a power supply is causing noise, then certainly try using a battery instead. If the problem was the power supply then the noise will be gone. Cheap, good isolated powersupplies can be bought from Effectpowersupplies (about £20). Also, remember that some pedals simply cannot be run of the same supply as certain other pedals without noise, even when using a quality supply. In that case, the only option is to use different supplies for each, or a battery for one of them.

Visual Sound One Spot is a lovely quiet supply.

But if you need proper isolated supply to each pedal you are looking at something like the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2. Not to be confused with cheap box supplies that use the box to disguise a simple series daisy chain inside.

Cheers for the help. If I remember back to saturday I think the noise was coming through when the pedals were on and off. It definitely didn't get louder as I turned up. Firdt of all I thought it might be the boost channel on the Rusty Box making a racket, but I isolated that and it was dead quiet - actually really impressed with that box.

When I went bass to amp there was no noise. On the night I did try different extension leads going into different power points, so the RB and Boss pedals were on separate leads and it still hissed.

I'll try the batteries - that's the next step.

Cheers
