JamesBass Posted May 30, 2014 Share Posted May 30, 2014 Recently put a set of these on my P, the EXL170s, while they feel nice, perhaps a little less stiff than my previous strings, I'm not sure there's any real benefit from them. My question is this: Do these beasts make a heavier gauge feel slightly lighter to play, or vice versa? I feel like Super Light are a teeny bit too flappy and Light are a bit too stiff and my hands fatigue quickly. I need a gauge in the middle!! Persevering with the Light gauge has not yet paid off and my hands end up aching, but Super Light play easily and are tremendous for slap but are just too darn flappety for fingerstyle playing. They have the same gauges as the D'Addarios (.045-.105 etc) but with a lighter feel, more flexibility within the strings and lower tension. So if you but a set of Dunlops that are an equivalent gauge to the D'Addario Light set, theoretically they should feel lighter than the D'Addario light set but without being as flappy as the D'Addario Super Light set :-) I know this as I recently went through the same thing. I really like a light set (.040-.100) and thought the D'Addario version was a little bit too tense still but when I tried the extra super light set (.035-.095) they were way too flappy. I tried some of the Dunlop Super Bright nickels (.040-.100) and they are perfect! They also have a much tighter wrap ratio which feels much smoother and gives a lovely focused bottom end to my precision in particular and I've had them on for nearly 8 weeks with no deadness despite at least 2 hours play a day.
