80s Japanese Squier P-Bass - pickup upgrades?

I have a medium scale (32) japanese made Squier P-Bass, serial A0 which i think makes it 85/86.

I was thinking about upgrading the pickups / electronics on this. I don't have another P to compare, so I might be wrong. Does anyone know anything about the quality of pickups/electronics on these?

It has the square edged type of pickups (not the sloping kind), look like standard size to me.

Any pickup recommendations as a starting point?
I'm after an old school P-Bass sound, Meters, Fred Thomas etc.

Cheers
Ted

For a traditional Precison sound, either the Fender Original/Vintage, or, if you prefer less mids (the Fender isn`t over-middy, btw) the Seymour Duncan SPB1. My preference is the Fender, as it has the mids that a Precision is famed for. But if you like deep and thumpy, the SD is very good.
