Scanbran Posted September 17, 2012 Share Posted September 17, 2012 I just received this bass today from Thomann, and while it looks fantastic in the overall quality of the finish, the nut drew my eye almost immediately. At the side there is a significant mark, which could be a join or excess gloss mark. It might be obvious, but as a new bass player I'm unsure, so I hoped for a little advice. Also, the nut itself is a bit rough and ready in it's execution, with debris from where it has been cut still lying on the upper side of it, and the slots appearing quite big. Is there anything to worry about or is it fine? big bird Posted December 21, 2012 Share Posted December 21, 2012 (edited) I've had a look at this bass in a shop and while there is much to like, especially the nice light weight and general look and feel, not to mention a decent range (nothing mind blowing) of tone... but my eye too was drawn to the nut which does look like the achiles heel of the instrument basically the nut is fitted [i][b]before[/b][/i] the neck is finished with varnish so the nut is effectively varnished in - now if the nut is perfect that's not such a big deal even if in principle its just not right but should you want to adjust or change out the nut... well I can see the entire area here being vulnerable to unsightly chipping and flaking of varnish as the the nut will invariably take some of the surrounding varnish with it messy I think Fender should address this as it really is a basic error of construction and semething you wouldn't expect to see even on a really cheap bass, let alone a mid priced machine - only a person who has never played a bass would build it like this - Fender should really know better I would return that bass - for £150 you "might" put up with it - for £350 ... no freakin' way Edited December 21, 2012 by big bird Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
