String tree screw head made of cheese...removal???

I have a P bass from which I wish to remove the string tree on the headstock.
Problem is the screw that holds it on is made of cheese and in tightening it up the screwdriver completely destroyed the cross in the head of the screw.
Now the screwdriver can get no purchase on the head of the screw in either direction.
Drilling it seems like the only solution to remove it.....but this screw is obviously screwed in to wood....surely drilling a screw screwed into wood is problematic?

How would you remove said screw?
