potentially stupid question :) re barrel jack socket, jack needs pulled out a wee bit to work

Equivalent jack Plugs are 6.35mm.

Heres a bit of anorakyness for you;

The 1/4" jack is the oldest connector still in common use, was designed for manual telephone exchamges in the 19th century, and there are those who still use it on guitar leads and worry about whether the cable is curly or not.

Yep, although the tip shape on those isn't the same as those we use today.
You can still find equipment in some of the older ATEs that use those.

They still vary nowadays, but I know what you mean. Still got a few of the round tip ones somewhere. and probably some ex ww2 throat mic ones, which had a flattened tip for some reason. and the body was about 1" diameter.
