AX3000B question

I have an AX3000B,and what I'd like to do is to be able to play a note/chord and have it repeat ad infinitum, so it goes

plunk plunk plunk...

Then I want to be able to play over the top of it, without the playing over the top getting added to the loop. I'm using the HOLD DLY function, with it assigned to the CONTROL pedal. However, when I play "plunk", then press the CONTROL pedal, then play "plink plink", it comes out as

plunk plink plink plunk plink plink

regardless of the initial state of the CONTROL pedal and what I do with it. So, any of you AX3000B owning experimenters out there, can I actually do what I want to do? If so, am I using the right effect (I forgot to try experimenting with FREEZE which may be the other candidate) and what do I need to do with the CONTROL pedal?
