I have the idea of a rather nice vintage P style bass with modern trimmings floating around my head and was wondering if any of the lesser know/part time hobbyist bass builders on the forum would be interested in building this. Actually, if anyone's interested, add a post to this thread.

I can source all the hardware, such as pickups, bridge etc and would probably have it finished by SIMS or someone else of equal repute. I guess I'm just looking for someone to carve the wood do the binding/blocks and fit the hardware and do a nice job of putting it together.

Anyone interested?

Here's some basic spec details:

Left Handed 5 String Custom Precision Style Bass

BODY
Swamp Ash Fender P style
Sonic Blue Paint
’72 P Style Pick Guard in White Pearl
Battery Box
EMG P5 Pickups, White
Hipshot 5 String A Style Bass Bridge, Chrome plated Brass
Dunlop Flush Mount Straplocks, Chrome

NECK
35” Scale
17mm String Spacing
Flame Maple Neck w Asymmetric Radius
Plain Maple fingerboard 20mm Radius
Music Man Style Truss Rod Adjustment
White Pearl Binding & Block Inlays
Fender Headstock shape - 5 inline tuners
Headstock Matching Body Colour
Hipshot Ultralite 3/8" Post -"Y" Key Tuners, Chrome

Here's the so called '72 pick guard

I'd also be interested to know if anyone makes a white 5 string pickup, either P style or Soapbar. I'm not a fan of EMG but it's all I know available in white and the pickup has to be white. It also has to be covered pole pieces.

cheers

Pretty sure you could get the bits from Warmoth, all you'd need then would be an assembly job.
Oh, and I think Wizard would probably do you a white 5 string P Bass pickup.
Really nice idea for a bass though, I reckon a mix of classic looks with modern functionality would be the best of both worlds.

My quote came to around $710 dollars, unfinished and with no pick up routing, which including shipping and the import/vat is around £530 odd quid.

An off the cuff price up from the Sims website is slightly more......

Jon Shuker would build it but it would cost more and there would probably be a wait.

Bare knuckle also do a custom wound 65 P pickup in a pale cream, would look really cool in this and they sound fantastic, esp if your after a vintage type sound.

Still bloody expensive for bits of unfinished wood.

Well, ignore, it's not what you are looking for.

maybe take a gander at this.

Allot of 5 string P pickups are actually 4 string size but with different internals and fitted with more offset (take a close look at the EMG website to see what I'm talking about), so you might be able to find a 5 string P pickup and swap the covers for white ones.

The woodwork for these kind of projects is usually fairly straightforward but have you got a particular neck profile in mind because 'asymmetric' can mean allot of different things :)

Oh yes, forgot to say of course I can do it - piece of p#ss :)
