[/quote] Agreed that anything made from paper or vinyl will wear through, but then at least the material around it will still indicate where the note should be played. My Upright-bass teacher said that when he first started he was told to put gaffer tape across his fingerboard as markers and he knew he had learned the positions when he had worn through it! Anyway, I use something from Staples called 'outline strips' I think they're for making borders on cards. They're really thin and narrow, which is what you want.
