double bass string help

hi guys, im trying to make a whamola and need to buy a double bass string. i think im going to get a D string but just wondering how can i tell if im buying a full size string also doesnt anyone know where to get cheap strings and do i need to buy a set or can you buy singles?

You can buy single strings no problem. I have bought from [url="http://www.stringmail.co.uk/dbass3.htm"]Stringmail[/url] and they are pretty cheap, if you can call DB strings cheap. They give you the choice of sizes you want. Anything from 1/2 to 4/4, depending on the string. There are quite a few places on the net that sell DB strings, just do a search.

thanks for the replys dudes, ive worked out that i need a string thats over 150cm. i dont suppose either of you know the length of a full size string?

This is where it starts to get complicated. Is that the speaking length you mean (the exposed length with no silk)? I've just measured an old 3/4 string which has about 150cm of exposed string. A 3/4 DB usually has a playing length of around 106cm. 4/4 will be longer, hence the need for different strings.

ahhh cheers for checking dude it is a pain in the arse cos i thought oh ill be able to get strings easy. i dunno i recon 4/4 might just be long enuff, didnt think it wud be expencive either as i built the whamola for basically nothing so this will be the most expencive thing i guess. ill try and get in contact with a shop and see if they will measure one for me. i feel sorry for u double bass guys i didnt realise ur strings cost so much
