Your first 'false' harmonic is always halfway between your fretting hand and the bridge (usually 12 frets above your fretting hand) and then divided along the string at the same nodes as per the open string (7th, 5th, 4th and 3rd frets and the same distances from thw bridge at the other end. In a nutshell, the point where you put your thumb moves up and down as your left hand moves up and down.
Exactly, but for that particular piece on a Jazz the pickups are ideally placed for reference.

Incidentally - and I know this is sad - I've been playing that intro on my acoustic upright this afternoon. Not quite so easy!
yh iv found now that i was trying to "pinch" (not sure if thats the right term for the technique) the harmonic with too much force, but if you do it with the gentle touch it rings more clearly. A compressor or sustain pedal would probably help to keep the volume up though
Perhaps I should have mentioned I was doing it on a Jazz defret through a TL Audio FAT-2 valve compressor :)

  3.
just spent the last 10 minutes trying to get the 2nd harmonics on the birdland intro ... Still need a bit more practice :) Would love to know how he gets so much sustain out of the notes though.

Heres a youtube link for those who dont know it

Not too difficult (he said arrogantly)... just watch where he puts his thumb to get the forced harmonic from the 14th position A, in each case about 1cm forward of the pickup poles. 1st octave from near neck pickup, second from bridge. There's a 5th harmonic between the two of course. I'm finding my right hand "flamenco" fingernails make it easier btw although I am wearing holes in them through doing it!

Dear god... did you rob a bank?

    Anyway hi :)

Btw I know they aren't your thing but I don't suppose you could guess at the value of a '63 P, factory custom J-profile neck with rosewood board, burnt orange finish (not sure if that's factory custom or refin), in original case?

    Tia,

  5.
He is more than welcome here and remember we have already exchanged amicable words via ebay while you lot were scrapping :)
Yes he said earlier... turns out you're one of the good guys. Who'd have guessed :)

Now tell me about this Ozark acoustic bass - I have yet to find an acoustic bass guitar that I like...

  6.
I'm not sure naming the person on here will help at this stage although feel free to offer my obsessive hoarder/self styled expert list of many reasons why it is fake to the faker. What if they say they bought it as real and have an email saying as such? You can see where our initial thoughts were coming from now I guess?
Yeah that did occur to me... except the original listing apparently didn't say anything apart from the rather transparent "converted to passive" thing and claimed the guitar was genuine.

So I guess naming and shaming is inappropriate without right of reply - just a little phrase I thought I'd throw in as Martin wasn't given it - and since Martin just wants rid of the darn thing and to forget the whole matter I think it's best left well alone.

Btw if he ever joins this forum (unlikely!) he's a genuine guy so be nice to him! He started playing bass in the 70s punk era when most of you in here weren't even thought of.

Ps stingrayPete1977 I think you have an identity crisis going on here :)

  7.
All that's missing here is Jack Regan saying "You're nicked".
I couldn't even be bothered to read all that stuff you quoted... I were defending my mate, stood my ground, vanquished all, crushed my enemies and now use their sorry skulls as candle-holders. Oh and my Jazz bass, I pulled it from a rock near Glastonbury Tor.

Other than that, I should maybe mention I am not entirely devoid of knowledge on the subject of Internet Libel. Not a challenge of course :)

But I forget, spoke to Big Mart earlier and he has found the name & address of the original seller, the one who faked up the item in question in the first place! So who wants to know?

  8.
Any ideas how much it is to join? Although as you say unless it's reasonable to add to the limit I would struggle with a choice of one bass or the amp :)
MU basic level membership (earnings from music under £5k pa I think) is £13 pcm billed quarterly... you get quarterly glossy mags and lots of online stuff, plus the guy who wrote Turning Japanese is the legal adviser I believe which is seriously cool imho. Oh and the free insurance... I joined a long time back just for the PLI after it being demanded by a particular venue, have stayed a member ever since as it's a good thing for a musician to be part of and to contribute to. Join!

  9.
I quite like the term self styled expert as it gives me a get out if I get stuff wrong :)
Now come on, you've already taken the label of obsessive hoarder, you can't be both!

  10. Join the MU - £2k of instrument insurance for free, plus you get £10 million of PLI which everyone performing live should have.

The MU insurance is ok for what I take out of the house generally and my house insurance covers everything while at home (I have my stuff named on the policy) at no extra cost.

I guess the £2k limit might be an issue to some of you high-end bass owners but I think you can pay the MU insurer for a top-up if it isn't enough.

Loads of other reasons for joining the MU of course, free template contracts and legal advice for example...

  11.
If you have a fretted bass that you already like, but maybe don't play it as often as you could; and you want a fretless....
Exactly my reasoning with my '89 MIJ Jazz... I like it but really only play upright and fretless these days, so why have a saleable Warwick Fretless (well theoretically saleable anyway) in use and a fretted Jazz gathering dust in the cupboard that I liked but to be honest had paid over the top for on fleabay so would never recover the money on - may as well move the Warwick on and get max use out of the defretted Jazz.

  12. If you over-analyze what you're doing the gig will be about as much fun as a root canal. Stop worrying about how good you are or aren't going to be - just enjoy the new experience and that will come out in your performance. I wish I was doing this gig, sounds great!

Looks like a standard 100K PCB-mount mini pot, only question is linear or audio taper (I don't recognise the TB prefix... anyone?). Any steps or centre detente? Anyway probably a couple of Euros on eBay for an equivalent part.

  14. Not work-related but last week I was bringing stuff in from the car and noticed the index finger on my left hand feeling slightly numb. Looked down and while I was watching the base of it swelled up and the first two phalanges after the knuckle started to go deep red then purple. But nothing hurt! It looked even worse the next day so with an impending lengthy rehearsal on double bass on Saturday I went to the medic who pronounced a burst blood vessel and said it would probably go away in a few days, which it did. Weird thing is that although it looked awful, it didn't hurt at any time and I still don't know how it happened. Anyone else done that?

I'll stick it on for a tenner opening bid and offer international shipping, let's see if the madness starts :)

  16. My favourite Jaco album is actually Joni Mitchell's Hejira... Jaco's playing on that is superb and I reckon enhanced by the fact the album is centered around Joni's songs rather than his playing. If you haven't heard it, it's worth a listen. The way Jaco drives the opening track is dynamic.

Just noticed wombatboter referenced Refuge Of The Roads in the post above - that's the final track on Hejira. Coyote is the opener.
