1. Hats off to my very very clever guitarist (well really I'm his bass player rather than he being my guitarist)...

I had left over from an old project a small front baffle cut for a 12" speaker and dual-ported... after a deal involve exchange of parts for labour the aforementioned guitarist agreed to knock up a cab around the baffle board which I could then finish to suit. I was expecting a basic box which I would cover with the usual carpet fabric.

Well I got it at rehearsal tonight and the workmanship is so good I am going to leave it uncovered! I'll probably stain or varnish for durability but definitely no carpet. Beech ply, solid construction, perfectly made, just needs a back and the cabinet hardware plus the recently acquired 12" neo speaker from Mykesbass and my 300w 1x12 practice/small gig cab will be ready :)

Will post some pics if anyone's interested.

  2.
It'd be interesting to see which is more popular too - lined or unlined (unlined for me)...?
I have one of each. Nice though the Jazz defret (i.e. lined) is, it's the unlined Warwick Corvette I pick up most at home.

The instrument I play out most is the WAV - unlined obviously but with a sometimes irritating array of dots on the fingerboard so not entirely plain either.

  3.
I was playing in a band where I needed to use a 5 string tuned in the usual way (BEADG) and also detuned to ADAD - but I only had one 5 string so just used the BEAD strings on a regular StingRay 4 stringer.

As I have a brass nut on the SR4 I just let the strings sit on top of the nut grooves. The action was a bit high, but not playable.

Why don't you try that, just to see what it's like? Maybe it will be fine...
I think I've decided a CRM5 is the way forward :)

Yours, but really courtesy of Mykesbass rather than moi as he recycled them in my direction... PM me your address and I'll post them off to you.

Sound advice methinks :) Sat looking at the nut earlier and thought do I really want to start filing bits off it?

So I guess there's a 5-string flatwound set for recycle...

Just listened to this... excellent trippy track with the Sugarcubey one in great voice then the end wraps your brain up into a crumpled piece of inky paper and slams it against the wall. Listen to it on headphones.

I didn't know about this site, lucky my MIJ serial # passes the test! I must put it on the bass soon :)

Yeah I had a sudden vision of a stick going into a hornet's nest :)

  9. Anyone got a 4-string in BEAD tuning?

Mykesbass kindly recycled a set of Hot Wires in my direction and it turned out to be a 5-string set, with no 5-string these days kinda tempted to do the BEAD thing on my Jazz defret but of course it means re-cutting the nut.

If anyone can relate good/bad experiences with trying this it would be useful before I get the chainsaw out...

  10. A nice 4/4 student Viola, 15.5" 2-piece back, good condition although with signs of use, soundpost intact, all in good working order. No maker's name or label visible. The instrument comes with a couple of usable bows (one needs some attention) & rosin, in a good-condition modern case. £85 + shipping or buyer collect.

  11.
For sure... that '79 natural finish fretless Fender Precision in Fender hard case I bought new back in '79 (from Andertons) is one I really wish I'd hung on to :)

Sorting through some old folders the other day I actually found the receipt for this - a brand new USA fretless P in the Fender case, natural finish, rosewood board, shop price £259 :)

  12. A couple of pickups on offer as they just won't play nicely with my difficult bridge and I'm going to go for something that isn't wing mount.

TM (Taco Man) pickup - similar to KK Bassmax. £50 shipped (within UK). SOLD

J-Tone "Reds" double paddle pickup, for either bass or cello. £20 shipped (within UK). SOLD

    Both in good working order.

  13. Seymour Duncan Paranormal Bass DI. An active DI box with footswitchable 3-band EQ and a footswitchable contour for slap (not that I slap, but it's a nice EQ preset for cutting mids and boosting LF & HF). Jack in, XLR and/or jack out so you can split the signal between PA and backline if you want. Lacks a volume control maybe but there's usually one on the bass :)

Do yourself a favour and boycott ParcelForce - they are absolutely no use to you, the insurance mis-selling gits.
Holy feckin' moly! I sent a 70-year-old uke banjo via parcel farce 48 last week and paid for enhanced insurance, good thing it got there in one piece!
