I've never played one of the American reissues, so can't really comment on how they compare.

But this one has a slim and relatively shallow C profile. A bit too slim for my hands, as I'm more used to chunky Precision and Stingray necks.

I've had a couple of PMs asking about the weight. It comes in at around 10lbs on my bathroom scales, so about average for a 70s Jazz.

Price drop to £1750

I am reluctantly putting my 1974 Jazz up for sale. All original, save for the thumbrest which I added for a bit of extra authenticity (FWIW the thumbrest is from a 70s reissue).

The pots date this to '73, but the thumbrest on the bass side would suggest 1974 or very early 1975 when the last four bolt necks came in. As ever with 70s Fenders, these are all a bit of an estimate, but this will certainly be one of the last four bolt Jazzes before the three bolt was introduced.

I'm selling to fund another purchase so I'm not really looking for trades. That having been said, feel free to try me. I could certainly be tempted by deals involving a Stingray HS or HH. I might also be tempted by good quality Fender or Ric guitars.

I think the £8,500 New Kings Road are asking is steep, but Fiesta Red is a rare custom colour - and one of the more desirable ones. I think Andy Baxters price was arguably a bit on the low side.

Ultimately, I guess it depends on what a collector will pay!

I love Chromes. Bright for flats, but still with a bit more warmth and depth than rounds. They do have a bit more tension than a lot of stings (noticeably more than the Ernie Ball Slinkys I use for rounds). But they're excellent strings IMO.

I've got one of these in my Stingray. Brilliant pre-amp. If I had a spare 'ray I'd snap this up!

Most of my favourites have already got a mention, but I've got to namecheck Colin Moulding (XTC).

I've also been here since Bassworld days. To be honest, I can't remember how I found Bassworld as it's so long ago!

In spite of my avatar, I can't claim any special knowledge! But it looks like a legit 78P to me. I guess the Clash connection is impossible to prove one way or the other.

The bridge isn't original, and the pickup looks to have been changed. So it's not going to be worth much more than £1000 IMO.

edit - actually, looking at the later pictures, the bridge does look original. I think it's just an odd angle on the first pic.

+1 to that. Some of the Smiths bass lines are great examples of melodic playing, but the overall feel is what really stands out. We play What Difference Does it Make in my covers band. It's a dead simple bass line, but the feel, and how it just works for the song, is a fantastic example of a tasteful bassline really defining the song. Pulling that off live is actually harder than I expected it to be!

I love the reverse headstock on these. Superb looking bass.

There's no question mark at all IMO. It may have been owned by Lemmy, but it's not a real Rickenbacker!

This is the best advice on the net on recognising Rickenfakers: http://www.joeysbassnotes.com/Fakericks.htm . This one falls down on lots of counts, all of which others have already mentioned in this thread. The real biggies are the binding under the bridge, bolt on neck, and fret board inlays.

I've got one of the Delano hybrids in my Shuker, and it certainly does a good job nailing the stingray tone.

And I used to own an Ibanez ATK. IMO it is the nearest you will get to a Stingray tone without actually owning a Stingray. They's got fantastic necks as well.

No I don't feel the same about those. The SX name and logo is completely different to the Fender name and logo, and the SX headstock is a different shape to a Fender headstock. And guess what - there's a reason for that. Fender aggressively asserted their IP rights in the 70s when the likes of Tokai were producing Strat copies that had Tokai in Fender style script and with proper Strat shaped headstocks (and very nice they were too!). You will struggle to find a mainstream Fender copy with a proper Fender shaped headstock for that very reason.

That SX [u]has[/u] to have a different shaped headstock and a non-Fender type logo because Fender would sue them otherwise. Have you actually seen a Rockinbetter headstock on the other hand? From 5 yards you would struggle to tell it from a Ric.

But that's my point about Rockinbetter - they are pretending to be the real thing. Or is it coincidence that they chose that name, chose an identical font, identical truss rod cover, identical headstock shape, and identical fingerboard inlays?

But a Rockinbetter, for example, is "making out to be" a Rickenbacker. The choice of name, the font used, the headstock shape, the truss rod cover shape, are all designed to look like a proper Ric. Otherwise why not call it a Tokai, use a different font and a different sdhaped Truss rod cover? The answer is simple - because then it wouldn't look like a Rickenbacker.
