1.
Current covers band does mainly indie stuff (arctic monkeys, kings of leon, killers etc) and we're looking for a song to add to the setlist that's very current. Something everyone knows and loves, but will be old in about 6 months so we'll drop it and find another "current" hit.

The problem is that it's proving hard. Nothing that's charted recently seems to fit our style. Any ideas?
Born This Way - the indie version. Find a way to make it all your own.

Also, don't listen to me, I know nothing. :)

  2. Well, I think you've got the basis of a stonking article right here:
We're just a local pub covers band - nothing exciting

we're all fat, bald guys in our 40s playing bloody Oasis and Kasabian covers to drunks.

If we get out alive it'll be a good night

I've given up.... my hearts not in it.
:)

  3.
Back Door. Ron Aspery, Tony Hicks, and the living legend that is Colin Hodgkinson.

Doddy, tell me that the bass isn't a chordal instrument, in the right hands.
+100 - surprised Bilbo left these guys out!

  4.
bump

What size venues do you think this is MORE than happy filling?

    M
Sorry - only just seen this!

Very hard to say, because of all the possible variables, and because my own gigging experience is limited. I'd say for pub gigs you're unlikely to go over half way up on the master volume. I don't think I've ever had it more than half way up on the master volume (and our drummer was loud) , so I don't really know how loud it is flat out.

You've always got the option of adding another cab if you want to, of course!

    Regards,

    E

  5.
As far as combos go, I can't recommend Markbass enough. Small and light but so so loud, and clear! If you get one of their combos that should be enough on its own, but you also have the option to add an extension cabinet at a later time too. There's a guy trying to shift one here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=markbass
and another here... :)

  6.
In your case (if you like the Trace tone) i would go for a Markbass CMD121P. Big sound with lots of punch in a compact and light unit.
Like this one... :)

  7.
(health warning: I am being deliberately provocative and should in no way be taken seriously ).
...provocative but scarily accurate :)
You don't need to know jazz theory to like Sketches of Spain. Just listen to it. Its not great because its hard, its great because its beautiful. But making something that beautiful is hard.
Superbly put. (And I'm not even that big a jazz fan)

    Bilbo for king! :)

  8.
On a more serious note: 'distressed' guitars. I mean, WTF?! That's like buying ripped jeans in the '80s. You've got to be a complete mug to spend money on something that somebody else has messed up on your behalf.
I wonder if the people who buy those would also pay extra for a 'distressed' or 'reliced' car? :)

  9.
..and also:

"Oral tradition, oral culture and oral lore is cultural material and traditions transmitted orally from one generation to another.[1][2] The messages or testimony are verbally transmitted in speech or song and may take the form, for example, of folktales, sayings, ballads, songs, or chants."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_tradition
...so if you pass tunes on by singing, humming or whistling them it's an oral tradition as well as an aural one, whereas if you pass them on by playing them, it can only really be described as 'aural' (unless you play them on a wind instrument???).

  10.
I wouldn't waste my time with them. Others may feel differently (and are entitled to do so) but I would not want to spend time solving the kinds of problems that these people create in their ignorance. Life's too short.
I thought this was a bit ironic, as it's pretty much how I would feel about doing Bilbo's day job. :)

  11.
Still, I find it quite wonderful that little Tommy Tucker is threatening to sue you! :) You'll be able to tell that story to your grandchildren.
You shouldn't mock - he was a true pro of the old school, having to sing for his supper if the reports are to be believed. Further, his efforts would often secure him only a very modest meal of white bread and butter. Unable to afford even a knife with which to cut said meal, it is possible that his poor financial prospects were responsible for his failure to find a wife.

  12.
Amen to that.

Each to their own, of course, but hi-fi is just a tool I use to listen to music, not a hobby in its own right.
I think the same could be said about bass gear, but I get the impression that it is a "hobby in its own right" for quite a few people on here. :)
