A BUMP for this stunning bass! That build thread is total wood porn. (btw, what is SPF?!)

I own a ACG Recurve 6 SC (http://www.acguitars...uk/Gallery/198/) and it is the best bass I've owned in terms of playability and sound. ACG is the #1 bass guitar brand for me, right now.

Some queries on this one:
1. ACG site (http://www.acguitars...uk/Gallery/125/) says this had 2 ACG FB pickups with coil switching. How do the two switches work now?
2. Is it a ACG-01 filter preamp?
3. What is the string spacing? Is it adjustable?
4. Is it an asymmetric neck with 0-radius? (I love that design.)

Thanks, Vic.

Hi Vic,

1. The switches now operate the DFA function
2. Yes, it has the ACG-01 filter preamp
3. 16 mm space, asymmetric pitch string spacing which is adjustable.
4. It has an asymmetric neck with a large radius, possible 24" IIRC

Cheers,
David

2. Hi, yes 34" scale.

The string spacing is adjustable, it's currently set up as Alan originally did where the distance between the edges strings is set, but due to the differing thickness of the strings, the spacing between the centres of the strings increases as the strings get thicker. Many high-end makers do this, Warwick included. It's effectively 16 mm IIRC.

You don't need double ball-end strings, the head stock is able to clamp down on normal strings. I tend to use Overwater strings.

3. Hi,

Up for grabs is my 6-string ACG, it's a brilliant instrument, but it doesn't suit the style I now play, and it's too good to sit in its case.

Original specs:

ACG bass serial number 014
Skelf 6 string headless. Body core White Limba top and back Flame Redwood black veneer accent line.
Neck Mac ebony/bubinga.
Fingerboard Acrylic Impregnated Spalted/Flame Maple.
Ramp Redwood and White LImba with black accent veneer incorporating 2 ACG single coil pickups.

Black Hardware.
ABM headless unit.
ACG filter based pre-amp.
East low battery indicator.
Tuned B to C.
Finish 60/20

Gig bag is included, with adjustment tools. The p'ups were changed by Alan from the original humbuckers to single coils, which really brought it to life. Alan has retained a block of the body wood+capping woods for the ramp in case any p'ups come along in the future that could be retrofitted by changing the ramp-block.

I'm looking for £1,200, ideally collected from Durham.

Thanks,
David.

4. BFM Omni 10.5 SOLD

In used, but great condition.

18mm spruce ply, carpet covering, 250W Eminence Beta 10 and a pair of piezo tweeters, twin speakon sockets, steel bar handles, plastic corner protectors. Trace Elliot "Bass Head" badge. Weighs around 26lbs, I think.

£125 plus shipping, or collection from Durham.

DHA VT2-400 preamp+5Wpoweramp

It has passive tone controls, valve pre/power amp, line out, valve power amp (5 watt at 4/8/16 Ohms) ok for home practice levels and recording, tuner out/mute, bright switch, plug for foot switch although I never bought one.

£200 [s]£300[/s] plus shipping, or collection from Durham.

because they dont sell? or because the cost too much to make or both?
I suspect both: the market for bass-guitar valve amps is pretty small as they need to be so powerful and then heavy. Guitar amps require less power, so I think the manufacturers have invested in production lines for the smaller amps that can knock them out at a reasonable rate and therefore cost. The effort to load the large transformers and components for a 400W amp would require huge tooling for rapid production, so that leaves smaller, hand-made production which is expensive again.

Also they are very heavy (35 kg + protective case?), so I'd love to have one, but really don't fancy having to shift it; or just leave it at home as a studio amp - and then, why do you need so much power unless you have an auditorium at home?

AND WHY THE HELL DONT MESA MAKE THEM ANYMORE!
... because people are wiling to pay £800 to £1000 for them, but MB need to retail them at £3000 to make a profit? It's why most things get discontinued.
