Genius but a bit odd to say the least (like many genius are I suppose!)Parade is my favourite album. Saw a couple of the O2 shows a few years ago and they were superb. There's a rumour he's about to announce some UK dates and i can only recommend that you try to see him live if you can.

Section 6d2 (page 5) should help answer your question

Having played a number of Jack Casady (five different of the gold, one silver burst and three black!) and the Ltd Ed Pelham Blue Gibson midtown bass for prolonged periods of time (a good few hours on each!), I'd have a JC every day of the week. They sound great, half the price and the minimal issues (mainly neck dive) are just as noticeable on both models. I think with a nice set of flats, the JC would be a really killer bass with a thunderous sound!

Also, the VariTone switch has some great scope for tone. The '50' option is a really nice, vintage tone and the '500' is just a full on, balls-to-the-wall tone.

Lovely instruments!

This ^^^^^ I tried them both in dawsons liverpool and I really wanted the gibson when I went in and I walked out with the jack , you cant beat the sound of the jack ,, ITS HUGE !!!!! Love it :-)

Nice for display, maybe, but doesn't look quick-grab enough for me.

By the way, re. your title... Is there REALLY any 'stress' on the neck from a conventional hanger?

The string tension on a bass is doing its best to compress the entire instrument with a force of 140lbs, or more. Doesn't hanging from the headstock simply decrease that compression by the (far lesser) amount that the bass weighs?

Dunno, but I've always felt that 'stress' to be pretty insignificant :)
Dunno about the physics to be honest, wouldn't hanging a guitar cause a bit of stress at the neck/body joint due to the actual weight of the guitar ? (applies to bolt on necks, not neck through)

5. Thanks Graham, I'm well happy with the BB1100s, plays like butter :) It arrived exactly as described, impeccably packaged and was a smooth transaction, all in all Graham is a top bloke, thank you.

6. Thanks Steve , I'll give that a go later , thought I could detect a bit of chorus too , maybe a touch of octaver ? I'm playing it with a pick and at the moment it sounds best on my Ibanez atk, I want to get it as close as possible .
I think the record had a mix of real and sampled bass, but no matter! I'd start with a bright mid-scooped preset that I'm sure your B9 has, with maybe a hint of chorus.
But FX aside, for my money the most important aspect of getting the authentic 2 tribes sound is the bass and guitar getting their parts and timing absolutely nailed. Now stick fours on the floor (that's 4s on the kick drum for you non-groovers) - then watch the punters feet immediately start tapping.

7. Finally set my rig up at home, Iv'e got a month till our next gig so I thought I'll set it up and work on a few new sounds, Markbass TA503, two GK Neo 112's, EBS Multicomp, Zoom B9, Korg DTR2000, all cabled up by OBMM (rockwire cables) sounds alright I suppose ;)

The neck on the 2024 isn't as chunky as on the 1200. Owning 70s/80s 1000, 1200, 2000, 3000 and 5000 basses, as well as current 1025 and 2024 basses, I'd agree that the 2024 is a beautifully built/finished instrument. The rail split pickup design on the 2024 evens out the sound a touch, where the reverse P pickup on the 1200 has a slightly squeezed mid-range by comparison. The 2024 has a slight high-end peak on it's attack that the 1200 doesn't suffer. The 1200 probably has a bit more grunt, although that could be said about the 1200 over the original 2000. Open strings ring very clean on the 2024, but sustain tails off a touch sooner. To date I've found the 2024 to be an exceptionally good instrument, but prefer recording with an '83 2000. The 1025 is a good instrument, but not close to the 2024. The 1025 is also nowhere near the equal of the 5000.

Thanks Noel, as you have owned nearly all the BB range (new and old) I suppose I,m gonna have to ask you if you could only have one BB , would it be 1 of the earlier models or the current model ?

It's worth mentioning that the weak spot on these Yamaha basses is the pickup selector switch. They are notoriously dodgy , and it's a shame that in their search for ultimate quality that Yamaha have overlooked this minor but infuriating achilles heel . It's a two and a half thousand quid bass with a 25 pence selector switch . I wish they had a used pan pot instead , but, failing that , at least use a decent quality switch !
yeah that seems a bit flaky of Yamaha , would be an easy upgrade to replace the switch , should'nt have to on an expensive bass though !

10. Hi Dingus, thanks for your very in depth reply, didnt know about the chunky neck , thought they would have the same neck profile more or less, I suppose a trip down to Bass direct is on the cards to try it out :gas: if I dont want the yamaha I'm sure Mark will have something in his fine bass emporium to tempt me , loving the price on the 2024 though, he has a black 2024 for the same price too,, decisions decisions!!

11. hi,
I've been relatively gas free since acquiring a 1979 BB1200 off bobby K on this very fine forum :D
until I seen this

BB2024 £1650.00 from Bass Direct, good price for a quality instrument that retails for £2350.00
I'm wondering if there is a massive jump in quality and sound compared to the BB1200 I already love and own? I'm coming into some cash soon and I'm gonna treat myself to another bass to add to the herd ,
short of diving in the car and doing a 5 hour round trip has anyone tried these basses out compared to the very good japanese BB1200 ?
thanks in Advance guys and dolls :)
