  1. Big decisions!

The people's basses I've de-fretted are of lesser value to them. One was a Peavey BXP which he bought of a soundman at a venue for £10...

If you're goinmg ahead with it though what karl says is great. I filled - Under customer's request - the bass neck with epoxy glue mixed with paint. He was after the same colour fret slots you see.

Its just as easy as filling the slots with veneer except you have to sand off lots of excess dried epoxy! check out this link for a photostory of how i did it:

  3. Hello

It is possible to buy a replacement especially on the cheap.

They are unique to each instrument and need to be set up right it involves quite alot of work and should really be done by a proper guitar tech.

But if you simply want to get it working again, pick up a pre-cut (Pre cut string slots) plastic one from eBay for about a quid.

    Good Luck,

    Jack

  5. Haha I've heard whinges about Chandlers too.

Interesting about the inconsistent neck bend issue - i would be surprised if they weren't still developing it for that kind of price.

I guess it may always be the same old preference for "hand made" type work too.

To be honest i see it as a challenge....

    Cheers guys

  6. Right then,

Im a luthier and i want to know how to create these compensated nuts. Who knows how? Its just the increments that you have to use is what im puzzled.

There's no way I'm going to bother getting trained by buzz feiten. is my best bet to obtain one from Earvana or old buzz and just copy it?

Im guessing that its never going to be that simple - every guitar's different and all that.

    Any thoughts on this?
Never made one so far but i'd love to try. and out of bone of course

    Cheers in advance,
    Jack

  7. Recently learned about these Plek machines.

As primarily a guitar repairer does this mean i am beginning to be replaced by a machine?!

Does anyone have more info on them?

    anyone experienced a finished product?

    Slightly scared,
    Jack!

  9. I've got a very old Bartolini TBIBT preamp that im thinking of installing.

    Brand new.

Its in bit at the moment and ill have to find the rIght pots and other components

    what it is:

"Active tone control with low impedance blend"
"Buffered input bass and treble comtrol - model TBIBT"

    controls:
    Pickup 1-2 blend
    bass
    treble
    active volume

does anyone know if theyre any good?
i want to know before I put it in my bass mainly because i'd have to drill extra pot holes...

Bartolini are pretty much sh*t hot right?

    thoughts?

    Cheers Jack

  10. Hi i'm considering fitting an old Bartolini TBIBT preamp into my bass but im wondering if its safe to run my pedals after this new pre amp.

Is it safe to do? ie would i damage my pedals? theyre just guitar pedals as im mostly a guitarist. Iv never been much use at electronics....

    what i use:
    Ibanez tubescreamer ts9
    and a Colorsound supa Tonebender.

    [url="http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://images.pedalheaven.com/Images/th/5861125522058.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.pedalheaven.com/categories.php%3Fc%3D1&usg=__voPPaj7nwxgG4J0evpn2-9ttV3U=&h=100&w=66&sz=6&hl=en&start=16&sig2=mIax3PMqcKsc7K81geeSDw&um=1&tbnid=pHIG4OXI90ixEM:&tbnh=82&tbnw=54&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dsupa%2Btonebender%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1&ei=_7BMS72FHIKL4AbQwJTvDQ"]http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt...FHIKL4AbQwJTvDQ[/url]

they're both pretty simple circuits - not sure if they employ buffers or not - but i would most probably cry if i melted my tonebender.

    any thoughts?

    Thanks alot
    Jack

  11. That list by "7string" is pretty comprehensive. I include all of these in my standard setups.

tighten any screws that might have come loose too! particularly machine head screws.

I always evaluate the pots and decided whether to clean them with contact cleaner but sometimes it can be a risky business if the pots are crap quality! Of course i point out all the defects to the customer and check that they want them doing too.

    acoustic guitars:
correct string break angle at bridge too

there's loads of tiny things i do which i dont even notice im doing half the time!!!

    Jack

  12. I did a epoxy filled fret slot defret job not too long ago - it's what the chap wanted. it looked ok but not for me. its surprising how much i reiled on seeing the frets - i ended up slipping out of key a bit too easily! i'd suggest something more visible. Perhaps LEDs haha
