  1. Morning baschatters!

As per the title, i'm keen to pick up a CompIQ STELLA Pro Compressor from BECOS, im coming away from using a 'dirty' tone and just a punchy clean bass tone, so having a super dynamic compressor will assist me in getting the most out of my tone.

I've spoken to BECOS direct any they advised coming in here and asking what people experience are as they currently dont have any UK representation so i'd have to buy unseen and just hope for the best. Any one able to advise one there experience?

For anyone who is unsure of what this is and wants to know here is a link to there website page (its a veryyyy slow website to navigate) and a great youtubue video demo of the pedal.

I keep a nothing special instrument in the house to practice on and use it to break in new strings. As I do much of my practice unamplified, the clang and zing doesn't matter much. When they get nicely worn in, they are ready to go on one of my gigging instruments.

Can't lie that is low key a really good idea haha, I do most of my playing unamplified as well might consider this as an option

  3. This was a joy of a thread to read,

For me, bass and playing in bands has always been an escape from whats going on around me, I don't actually have any real musical knowledge as I learnt to play from the guitar players in my band. I'd love to know more but converting my escape into my job would be a disaster.

It was just to try it really, some of my flats are 20 or so years old and sound great, I wouldn’t say it’s taken them to that point but definitely takes the edge off

Yh I feel you, very cool indeed, i'd love to try a set of 20 year old flats I think that would sound unreal, the set I have on my p bass are about 4 years old and have a lot of sweat and grime built in already so I can imagine 20 years sound thumby as alll hell haha

I typically practice bass at least 90 minutes a day, so two or three days they're nicely played in. Itsmsuch a relatively quick process it hardly seems worth faffing about with ky jelly or pile cream.

yh i feel you, I think its more of a quick fix for that deaden sound more then anything, if I broke a string on my flat wounds and had a new set the night before a show, great way to cut off that high end sound of new flats.

Just reviving this one as I tried it today, I fitted a new set of labella Low tension flats to one of my jazzes and played it for a while, then I took them off to clean the fretboard and adjust the truss rod, I wiped the strings with Vaseline and cleaned them with a clean cloth and refitted, you can’t feel the Vaseline at all and the difference in tone is considerably noticeable, a much warmer sound but not too dull, it’s what I was looking for so really pleased

That is fantastic, next time I re-string my bass with flats imma do it, for science!

Is it something you think you would do each time you restring, or just a one off to try it?

I never publish the full SN of any gear I sell as it could then lead to someone claiming it was theirs and stolen. However, I have good records of my gear and would have found out a year from the manufacturer if I could to help, and passed that on, as well as when I bought it and a reasonable guess of hours of use, though this is really a poor indicator of how it might sound and will give no idea of when the tubes will likely need replacing. For tube amps I generally assume they'll need replacing unless the seller can prove a replacement time. I'm an EE and have repaired a lot of tube amps.

Totally understandable, yh I only needed to roughly date the amp so I could work out the worse case if they have never been changed

Not sure which part of Essex you're in, if it's the Colchester end I have an old Phonic PCL3200 which you are welcome to borrow to see if you can make it do anything useful.

Appreciate the kind offer, I frequent Colchester regularly, i'll do some research and if its something i'd like to try, i'll PM you. Cheers again!

dbx160x if you can find one, still one of the best compressors for bass on the market, or if you're very flush an Empirical Labs Distressor...

The secret with any in-rig compressor is where you put it in the signal chain and how you use it, too much compression is never a good idea.

The beauty of the 160x is it's soft knee and the auto attack release, which works very well in this unit, not so well in others, it's a very easy unit to get a good result out of.

If I had a choice I'd put a Distressor in the rack.

From my limited research the 160x is the one that popped up a lot and seems to be a fair number of them about.

Thanks for weighing in, sounds like exactly what im after

  10. Thanks for getting back. Yes I have a few pedal compressors myself, and do really enjoy them just exploring some options as its something i've always wanted to give a go.

I would prefer not to use one either and any time I don't need to, I don't. I play in an extremely fast and heavy death metal band so in that setting a compressor is a must and helps me punch through the mix more consistently against the blast beats and low tuned guitars.

Yes and tried to low D on E ...

Fair enough, didnt know if you where using a super low tuning or something so thought I'd ask, but i'd also be using it in standard and drop D. From experience when you tune to low on a bass and use distortion it just doesn't work as well but yh

  12. For the first time in a long time, i've gone back to a 19' head and space in the rack for some additions.

I'm in the market for a new compressor, and i've always wanted to explore building a rack compressor into the rig so just looking for some general information from people that have done it.

What brands are good? What models are good? Is it worth exploring or should I just stick to pedals?

Also from my limited research you can pick up these compressors/limiters for as little £70 on FB marketplace at the min.

  13. oooooo that is a handsome looking bass, love the rail magnets for the pickups, and overall look of this thing.

great tones on the video also, sounds nice and punchy, you bent the HELL outta that G at the end haha

    thanks for sharing 🤘
