I read ( talk bass?)  that Stan Clarke tours with a ply bass ( teats them as disposable).  But he records with a 100+ yr old carved one.

In live performance what notes you play probably counts for more than the sound ..especially if there's a pa between you and stadium!

    horses for courses.

I only have space for one double bass and ploughed all my savings into the German brute some 35 years ago so it has to do everything.  Peter and the Wolf for a church full of children today. Mingus session tomorrow.

That's very helpful, thanks for the information, I really  appreciate it. Yes, the bass plays well, and has a great, deep tone with good sustain. Just ordered a pickup to the bridge. I wondered if people now use little internal microphones now that clip on and go inside the F holes and link wirelessly to the amp?

  3. I recently acquired a "Blonde" ¾ Double Bass, it plays well, sounds great,  and it's a real good looker, too, and I wonder if you could help me identify it, and maybe put a date to it,  as there is no label or markings at all.

Its previous owner bought it secondhand in the early 1980s, so it must pre-date that - maybe the seventies/sixties - or earlier.

The lady that I bought it from was a tutor of string instruments, so that it was only ever used for tuition purposes for more than the last 40 years. This means that it is in great condition, never having been outside her house in her ownership.

I know that there are far fewer blonde basses than the regular darker brown finish, so I thought it may be possible to work out its age and maybe the brand of it - the nearest thing I can find in pictures, would maybe be a Kay?

The way that it is constructed is slightly different to "normal" in that there is a broad fillet of wood running round both the belly and the back of the bass where they attach to the sides - not the usual overlap of just the thickness of the top and back. It's finished in a nitrocellulose polish/varnish.

Many thanks  for any help you can give.

  4. Here’s my Electric Upright Bass stand for sale – it’s a really well made stand and very strong.

A good piece of kit by Konig & Mayer and in “as new” condition.

I no longer have an electric upright so it’s got to go.

See the link below for full specification, and the price which is £108 if you order a new one from Amazon.

Konig & Meyer 14160-000-55 920 to 1620mm Stand for Electric Double Bass - Black : Amazon.co.uk: Musical Instruments & DJ

I’m in Royton, near Oldham, Lancashire, just 5 minutes off junction 20 of the M62

Selling for  £60.  Buyer collects, or I can pack it and send it by EVRI – it weighs 2.6 kilos, so a packed weight of under 5 kilos will cost £8  tracked and insured for UK the mainland, but you’d have to pay me first, of course.

  5. 3/4 double bass "Tatra by Rosetti – Stradivarius Model" made at the famous Cremona Factory (now known as Strunal Schönbach) in Luby, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) some time in the mid 1980s, I understand.

Upright bridge to nut string length 40”/101.5cm. It’s in really good condition – only a couple of minor scuffs to the finish either side of the edge of the upper bout.

Comes complete with soft case/”gig bag”, and stand.

I’ve fitted the bass with the Presto |Nylon Tape Wound strings which feel great and have the look of old school “gut” strings. (The original old steel tape wound ones are in the Presto box and are included as spares).

It hardly gets played at all now, so it’s up for sale.
