The VT definitely can do grindy, so I'm not doubting your experience with it! The character dial really affects how much "grind" you get. Have a listen to how I use it here (just through the VT, no other eq/effects etc.):

Yeah, that sounds really nice! Maybe I'll see if I can borrow it again amd have another go.

NuX MLD?  Not mega expensive but you have 3 amps 8 cabs and mid control (+drive).

I did look at that and think it looks cool, but read a huge thread on it on another forum, half of which was complaining about the software not working, amd many of which were complaining of the drive sound since a firmware update or something! Do you have experience gigging with one?

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I know you mentioned the Sansamp was a bit "grindy", but have you tried the VTBass? I use that currently for my IEMs and that gives me a nice fat warm sound.

There is also the Two Notes Revolt Bass which I absolutely love the look and sound of.

And as Boodang said, the SpectraDrive is great (assuming it has essentially the same circuitry as the old RH amp heads, or at least can sound like them).

Sorry man, yeah it was the VT bass I borrowed. Maybe didn't give it enough of a chance.

That 2 notes does look great actually.

Hadn't considered the Spectradrive. Not sure why, the digital thing puts me off a little, but going to have a little listen to some demos of it with my IEMs. Thanks!

  4. Hi all,

Please could I canvas some opinions? I'm not really a gearhead at all, and have never spent north of 90 quid on a pedal, so want to get this one  right!

I would like a quality preamp!/di pedal to ideally give my IEM mix a bit more of a warm and less sterile feel for a corporate/functions group (as well as a nice foh tone). It feels so sterile having a straight di tone going straight into my ears! A secondary function would be to help with rubbish backlines or di situations at festivals and club gigs with original projects.

It would be amazing if there was something that feels amp/tube like, although I understand there's nothing that is truly going to cop that feel!

I don't know if this is useful, but I play mainly soul, funk and pop. Love the big, warm tones of George Porter Jr and Pino with D'Angelo. Totally understand that lots of that is strings and technique, but I feel like I've got that in front of an amp. My favourite that I've played infront of was an all valve Trace Elliot with 4x10.

    Budget is around 350 quid.

The OE Bassrigs? I'm a little worried about reports of the cabsims being dark out of the di?

The new Ampeg looks cool? Not sure it feels as amplike to play as the Bassrigs? But flexibility of IRs means I'm sure to find something I love for IEMs, right!?

Or go something like a Sushi Box and then add an IR loader if I feel like I need it once I've had a play?

    Am I missing anything obvious?

I went down the Sansamp route and found it a little grindy in-ears.

Apologies for the long post- there are just so many options!

  5. Hi all,

I'm been making a body to fit a lovely neck I have spare, and I've got it all carved and playing nicely - just the electronics to go! I fancy a passive stingray setup, as it's a bit different. Also, I played a passive shortscale MM Stingray recently, and the sound was great!!

If I could have help with two questions, that would be much appreciated.

    1. When looking for pickups, should I be looking at their output to determine whether they'd be good humbuckers for a passive setup? I have read that many humbuckers sound anaemic wothout a preamp, so how do I determine which ones will give a tone similar to the passive MM Stingray?

    2. I am a novice when it comes to electronics! I do have a push/pull series/parallel Jazz bass loom that has worked nicely on a jazz in the past. I suppose I can't just wire up each of the coils in a humbucker to this loom as a series/parallel switching option?

Sorry if these are obvious questions - like I said, electronics are not something I'm familiar with.

    Jack

  6. This was my first ever pedal, apart from a tuner! It's a great d.i.

I wish the treble knob was a little more useful, though?

Have just got a spark, too, from a guitarist friend. I think that is a great sounding overdrive. Really couldn't believe how natural and warm it sounded, let alone for something so cheap!

I was fortunate in that I found the bass that suits me ('72 Jazz, found in a hock shop in the early 1980s) quite early on. It was the first quality instrument I bought and the third bass I owned, so I haven't had that many. I try other basses (and have bought the odd one over the years), but I keep coming back to the old favourite. It just works for me. I have a Mex' PJ as a backup instrument, a Bitsa P I assembled and a cheapish 5, but that's about it.

Similar to me- lucky to land on a lovely bass at 16- didn't get another untill I was 31!!

Discovering Basschat (and particularly the classifieds) has not helped with a new and growing sense of GAS, mind... 😬

HOAXX- pop and rock covers, the two Xs is just to make us easier to find on Facebook etc.

There was one other band named the same, a dance outfit that hadn't done anything for years, so...

All happy with it still, doesn't pigeonhole us.

I was in a band called Dumper for years, never choose a name whilst several pints in down the pub 😁

I like HOAXX - good name for a covers band!

I know how you feel with the drunken deciding of names- I played in a band for years as a uni student called Moist...

  9. Wow, a few of these lists make me realise just how modest mine is!! I've never owned more than 2 at a time...

    Unbranded starter bass.

Godin (for the next 16 years)

Fender (lasted a grand total 1 year)

    Tokai

that's great. would you say the sound is very different to fender p basses in a gig, practice settings?

yeah rose morris is a great shop. i don't know why but everytime i go to morris i play well lol. I also went to guitar guitar in camden and tried the new fender original vintage ii 60's p bass, the vintera 50's p bass (i really like this) and some custom shop p bass. the tokai just played better like it was already set up.

where did try the Japanese pb62's? its tricky to find in london/uk.

I had zero knowledge myself. i did a google search and its to do with the strength of the magnet. apparently alnico 2 have a warmer sound with slightly less output compared to alnico 5. maybe tokai over wind the pickups and to compensate. who knows. they are definitely more punchy than fender pick ups. I would love to try a maple neck hardpuncher. I have been listening to paul jackson on herbie handcock's the flood live album in japan. My lord its amazing. gutted i found it so late

The 62s were fairly local on Ebay and FB Marketplace. There are a load at Fender Fever, which is in London, too.

That's interesting about the pickups - it does tally with what I've experienced so far with gigging and at home. It is sort of smoother in that there is possibly a little less clank than some of the Fender Ps I tried, but like you say, there is more punch there, to my un-expert ears at least!

And wow - that live album is great. Really like Herbie Hancock, but haven't listened to much live Headhunters/Thrust stuff at all. Great recommendation - thanks!

Another thing - I've noticed my EBS Octaver tracks it really very well - no glitching on the D and G strings beneath the 5th fret, and follows the E string down to a low Ab. Not sure if that's to do with the bass, or the pedal, though.

funny i saw this. Just before xmas i went into central london and took a trip to denmark street. First popped in wunjo's and tried some new fender P basses (pro ii,50's vintera). i then went into rose morris a couple doors down. They had the exact Pbass you bought in store. I was blown away how well if felt and played compared to the new fenders.

I decided i wanted to head to the bass gallery and compare to a JV 1983 pb62 fender MIJ. i also tried some fender 70's p basses and the tokai was the the most comfortable to play and just felt right. a 70's P with a ash body rosewood neck was second.

whats interesting is the pick ups are alnico 2 rather than alnico 5. I probably preferred the sound of the ash body ever so slightly but my lord it was amazing to play. Felt setup where the others felt stiff

That's great! Rose Morris is such a great shop.

I really did like some of the Japanese pb62s that we tried, too.

I've had a chance to gig with it a couple of times now, and take it to a few practices, and it really is lovely in those settings. Nice and punchy - lives up to its name.

What is the difference between Alcino 2 and Alcno 5? My knowledge of different p pickups is not great.

  12. Never posted any videos here, but here's a couple of clips from NYE. Includes the first time I've played my new Tokai live, and a rare outing on sax during Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher!

Our band is called The Enrichments.
