I always wanted to be a drummer, but lack of funds or suitable place to practice never materialized.  Got given a bass at 14yrs old so that was that.

Onwards to music college, had to choose a second instrument - drums it was.  Had an awesome teacher called Martyn Webber.

Had a kit every now and again when practical, even gigged as a drummer for two or three gigs!

Flash forward again, my eldest takes up the drums, gets kit, gets alright, chucks it in.

Now, I have a partially built garden room and a Premier Olympic kit waiting to go in!

12/14/20 mahogany shells, a Super Zyn ride and some Tosco hats - all of it older than me, and sounds great!

love it, great looking kit for sure! I have an old premier kit my Dad learned on, he gave it to me to learn on when I was a teenager… I’ll hang on to it in the hope one of my kids likes the idea of drumming and I can pass it down to them

Yeah I’ve heard it’s quite ‘big’ on bass!! Apparently the Daddy-O is quite good too. I believe Marcus Miller uses one.

yeah I had that one too but then got a Marshall Guv’nor (which it’s meant to be a clone of) so I sold it

  3. Yep, I’ve owned a few of these over the years, sold them each time due to lack of use… I tried other pedals but eventually just gave up and decided chorus wasn’t for me.

Then recently I got another in a job lot of pedals and gave it a quick try, search over, this is what I was looking for in a chorus pedal after all!

Chorus still isn’t my favourite effect but if/when I need it, I’ll be using one of these for sure

  4. So, I finally played my first Westone bass… it’s really good!

I know there’s alot said about these, and people are very much in the know anyway…. But I’m really surprised by how nice it is to play and how good it sounds. Especially considering this model is very simple (and a lower/student model type thing) but it just sounds right wherever I put the tone knob.

I know the thunder basses are the ones that get the most attention, but which other models should I keep an eye out for?

Even just in the spectrum series of basses there seems to be quite a few different models… I’m still learning what’s what, it’s clearly gonna take a while!

Nice! I think those FRP snares are fairly rare/sought after.

    My Yamahas are:

    Akira Jimbo Sig 13x7

    Peter Erskine Soprano 12x4

    Maple Custom 14x6

Brass Custom Absolute (or whatever it was called - it has Absolute lugs anyway!) 14x4

I really want one of the old Yamaha Bamboos but they're hen's teeth.

Yeah I saw the bamboo ones and was like “add that to the shopping list…” then I saw the price! Maybe not!

sounds like a very cool collection, I’m trying to steer clear of the signature drums for the sake of the bank balance.

I think I know the brass custom absolute you speak of… I’m trying to also limit myself to one of each material (so I can compare etc)… but I couldn’t resist getting the bigger steel like the mini one I have… maybe that’ll have to be one of each size, in each material!

Brass next hopefully, then maybe aluminium. It’s an expensive interest!

I had a Mark IV 400 Series head, and currently have a 120 Century. Both cracking heads. I think I paid £100 for the Mark IV and £70 for the Century.

yeah they’re really good, I only bought that mark iii to get the cab it came with but it’s too good to move on! I love how they’re pretty much the exact opposite of my Gallien Krueger rig. The distortion out of them is awesome too!

the century has been my secret weapon for a while, sounds great in the studio for big dirty vintage tones

I realised the other day I have literally run out of space for my snares! Yamaha probably predominate in terms of brand, but I've got Ludwig, Slingerland, Gretsch, Dunnett, Ahead and so on!

nice! There are worse problems to have for sure!

I have to set limitations on my collecting nature or it just gets out of hand. I’m only allowing myself Yamaha MIJ stuff (which is killing me the newer stuff I want to try) or premier if they’re really cheap.

Here’s pics of some of the collection!

the sad thing is I’ve barely been able to play any of them yet… one day soon, I hope

  8. Here’s my Yamaha kit! Not the best pic - finish is a sparkly white kinda thing.

I too had Gretsch before this… I’ve owned various brands but always loved Yamaha stuff so in the end I just sold everything else and went Yamaha. I too have/have had Yamaha PA stuff, basses, guitars etc. you can’t go wrong with Yamaha!

one weird side effect from COVID/lockdowns was I joined a group on Facebook called ‘snares’ and decided to start a collection of Yamaha snares (I got a little sidetracked and picked up some Premier ones too!).

  9. Hey!

    yep, drummer over here!

I play a Yamaha Oak Custom X kit and I love it! Sadly I haven’t really been able to play since the whole global pandemic thing… and then I moved house… and there’s another baby on the way… but, you know, soon!

How about you? What drums are you favouring at the moment?

  10. Here’s a funny little aside from all of this… I always believed I just stumbled upon the T-40 one day and began collecting them… but here’s a pic I found a few years after buying my first couple… my mums old band, a picture that would’ve been in a photo album at home when I was growing up… look at what the bassist is playing

That is awesome! Sometimes I try to cull my collection of basses etc but when I see things like this I go all warm inside.

absolutely! I used to own such a random collection of instruments where it was more about a desire to try everything… then I realised I always came back to these, so I sold everything and just bought more of these. I have such a strong impulse to collect things… the trouble is I play drums and guitar as well so my house looks like a music shop

That amp/cab on the left looks like a Peavey rig I had in the early eighties. It was a bit of lump to lug around and probably contributed to me stopping gigging at that time. After that, I loaned it to a “friend” who’d joined a band but didn’t have his own gear. I never saw it, or him again 😡

Plot twist: I was that “friend”!

not really! Sorry to hear that. It’s a brave man who steals another man’s rig but also a stupid man that runs off with a Peavey Rig… you aren’t gonna get too far without help

    All blade pickups! Toaster next?

I’ve had them… I just decided to try and curb my collecting as it was getting out of hand… I’ll only buy those from 1982 (but with an exception made for this one of course!) as that’s the year I was born. I’ve sold about 4 or 5 over the years as well!

Nice looking bass, how did you manage to track the actual one down that was in the book

I’ve been aware of it for years - there was a listing that used to pop up on Google searches of when it was sold at auction… obviously I didn’t think I’d ever get it!

I guess as it was made for a Peavey dealer in the UK, my odds of getting it were better than they usually are for these American made basses… but yeah it was one of those “I can’t really let it pass me by can I?” Kinda moments. I’d have been kicking myself for the rest of my life

    Congrats, looks great 🤩

Did you travel back to 1980 and got it brand new? Or did you pull up floorboards in your house and found it in a time capsule that the previous owner had put there? Amazing.

yeah I have a collection of these, one of which I’d say is in ridiculous condition for its age… well, until I got this one! It’s in absolutely amazing condition for something made in 1980

It looks stunning. Excuse my ignorance but what is so special about it? (apart from being mentioned in a book)

And afcourse, being a T-40 with this beautiful wood: what does it weigh?

Yeah its a one off special and was made as a gift for the author of the book in 1980 as he was the main Peavey dealer in the UK at that time… it’s the only one you’ll see without a pick guard (there are a few T-60 guitars) and the controls going through the wood of the body (with a rear control cavity). It’s made of Magnolia (according to the man who designed these, I’ve also seen him say he personally built this one in his carport which is very cool)  and the neck is figured maple so it’s a fair bit fancier than the regular T-40s you’ll see…
