4.
I disagree. A solo can be a spontaneous pice of brilliance but if you are not one of the very few people who can produce one of these every time then a certain amount of preparation is essential.

If your soloist just does the same pentatonic scales evey time or does no building, adds no tension or a story then it's just so much bluster and widdle.

I'd much rather someone worked out a solo they play more or less the same each time for some tunes.

Peter's man is playing covers though so he'll have a solo to copy, I guess.
yeah mate, you've got a point. Ignore my previous post as I obviously talk a load of crap! :)

  5. I wouldn't want to play with a guitarist who had to rehearse solo's. They should be 'in the moment' and spontaneous. Also if you're in a band where you don't think people are taking care of their own business then it just causes resentment. He should practice at home, rehearsal isn't the place to twat about.

    Enjoy.

Very nice Phil, love Mr. Berlins' take on this.... this is one number that I've been meaning to work out. dont suppose you've got the tab? :)

  7.
Big question, JPS. The honest answer is 'all of the above' but I will try and give you a starting point.

The most important thing to learn in jazz at the early stages is the jazz blues form in F and in Bb.

    F7/// Bb7/// F7/// ////
    Bb7/// //// F7/// D7///
    Gm7/// C7/// F7/D7/Gm7/C7/

    or

    Bb7/// Eb7/// Bb7/// ////
    Eb7/// //// Bb7/// G7///
    Cm7/// F7/// Bb7/G7/Cm7/F7

If you can play walking lines over these two and improvise over them, you are on the way.
I know it's a long-shot but, can you think of any examples of songs with the above chord progressions as a useful sort of play-a-long-a-thing-thing?

  8. Make sure you're learning the same version of the songs as the rest of the band. Any tracks that fade on record you'll need to establish what the ending is. Write an 'Idiot sheet' for the tracks you're sketchy on using a big marker pen! Turn up on time. Be nice (even if the keyboard player is an obnoxious little twat!) DON'T GET DRUNK UNTIL AFTER THE GIG!!! but most of all....enjoy yourself.

  9.
I don't really know Megadeth much at all, but it sounds to me like you'll have that down if you give some time to practicing with a metronome. It looks difficult but you are nearly there with the fast parts. Nice one!

This is one of me doing a Zappa number .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=focGv64Wj0A

I hardly ever play with a pick but you kind of have to to get Scott Thunes parts :)
Great stuff. I've always loved Thunes' playing. Keep It Greasey from the YCDTOSA Vol.3 album is a particular fav of mine. Tom Fowler (another Zappa pick player) also does a great version of this song.

    Really tidy work though mate.
