  1. Looking to trade or sell my mint/new Rickenbacker 4003AC for either a 4003W or a 4003SW + some cash. Could also be interested in a 2 bass trade (with one being one of the aforementioned basses) and some cash from my end.

The bass is like new, I've only had it out of the case 3-4 times, and played it for less than an hour. Absolutely no scratches, dings or nicks. Perfect condition. Same with the OHSC. Also includes all the case candy.

Only 420 of these were ever made, and it is a revolutionary bass, as it was the first to implement the v2 rickenbacker bridge, and double "treble" pickups. Sounds like an absolute monster.

I'm only selling it because I'm not too keen on the green, and I don't feel justified playing a 4000€ instrument with my current skills.. I'm also too afraid I'll scratch it if I ever use it for a gig.

    Anyway, here's some pics:

I can provide more on request.

Can be safely shipped worldwide, as I am an experienced packer. Will also have tracking and insurance.

  2. Yeah.. Since I started this post, I've aquired 3 real ricks. I love them!

I've yet to get a faker, allthough I am very interested in one. I'd like one to use as my main player, so I don't have to be overly cautious about it. But with the prices some people are asking (especially here in Norway), I can get 1 rick per 2 fakes, which is just stoopit.

Hopefully I'll come across a decent one in the near future, where the seller is a little more grounded😂

Agree about the damage (although if it's only minor fretboard delamination near the nut, it's a really easy fix) but most Fakers don't have their original trc & I wouldn't say it impacts value.

Would need to see pics to confirm it's a Kasuga - but imo €600 is a lot for any Faker.

Btw theres an aria pro 2 faker over at talkbass for 1900 dollars:p

I'm definitely sure, its identical to another on talkbass. But the seller turned out to be certifiably crazy. He kept spamming me with messages, wanted me to trade a 1200euro bass for it with no money, etc etc. So it fell through.

Knowledge is a journey with no destination, young Padawan. And I have been walking in circles for a very long time... :D

    Good luck finding one!

Came across a Kasuga maple neckthru. Is it worth the 600ish euro's ya think? Decent condition, but lacking TRC. Also has a small crack between board and neck up at the truss, seller says its 100% stable tho.

The bridge is just the little bit with the 4 string saddles on it and the tailpiece is the big block it sits on which is where the strings thread through; the pull of the strings can cause that to lift.

The 70's ones were especially prone to that, but the more recent ones had a bit more bracing to them, which made them less susceptible but not immune to tail-lift.

Looking at my 2013, its lifted about 1-2MM at the "butt" part, is that the beginning of it? Does it sit completely flush when new?

    Don't use heavy gauge strings.

There are a few ways of addressing tail-lift:

    • If it happens, just buy another tailpiece and put that on to start from the beginning again.
    • Don't over-tighten the 3 screws under the bridge.
    • Get a Hipshot replacement bridge (if you like the look of them).
    • Put an extra two screws through the end of the tailpiece to bolt it back down (unsightly, but RIC did it on some).
    • Get a RIC v2 bridge, which eliminates the issue; it does need new holes drilling, though.
    • Come up with a Heath-Robinson fix of your own, for example slotting a bent-steel bracket under there somehow.
    • Get a custom made tailpiece which is stronger (I looked into it, but a local aluminium workshop wasn't interested in doing a short run of them).
    • Put a Badass or Schaller 3D bridge on the bass - it does need the under-bridge bays to be filled in, though. Geddy Lee had a Badass on his and RIC themselves used Schallers on the 4004 and 4003/5 models. (Some folks even put Kahler whammy bridges on their Rics.)

Hey, just to clarify this; It's the bridge itself that bends?

So what I can do basically, is use the current one until it's lifted or It becomes a problem, then buy a v2 bridge and get it installed?

    You need more amplification ...

I know, right? Actually in the process of re-fining my gig-rigs. Adds 2 175w amps, each with a 2x10, for L/R on stage, with the fender rig in the middle backline. It's part of an experimental stereo setup using a bunch of fun panning/sweeping effects.

The aguilar is just for home practice...... ;)

  9. I am not, but I will look it up:D I really dont use facebook much though. And thank you for the tip on custom TRCs! That'd be a real cool solution to the problem of them being impostors!:D

@prowla@Bassassin I doubt I'm getting any more pictures of the two original ones discussed in the thread. But I'm prepared to make him a fair offer for the both of them, as I've seen em now. Worst case scenario I'll hang on for decoration.

How much should I offer without seeming disrespectful you think? 400 for the pair?

  10. According to the owner, they both play fine and any damage is visual. The jet might have been refinished as you say, he mentioned there was some bad paint stuff on the back of the neck.

How bad do you think the tail lift is? And how can I prevent it, AND what to look for to determine the severity when/if I get my hands on em?

  11. Yeah the pictures are terrible... On my end theyre abit better, but they size down when I post them here. I'll try to get more picks, or maybe pick them up for cheap.

I think it'd be cool to have them for use in our rehearsal space, it would save me from dragging my 4003 there every time. I dont want to leave it there because there's other bands that use it aswell.

If they're in decent shape, with no tail lift etc, would they compare sound-wise to my 4003?

What do you guys consider the best vintage copy?

Thanks so much for all the information! I've never done a proper deep dive on the actual "lawsuit" of the "lawsuit era", so I figured there must have been atleast one suit, but no! Haha! Fun fact fo'sho.

Ok so, basically these are "no name" high quality through neck rick copies from the 70s, then? I know there were a few big brands who made rick copies, but had no idea there would be this many. Especially not this hard to distinguish from the real deal! Seems like they're either pretty rare, or a very well kept secret.. Or maybe they all fell apart or got new TRCs like these ones...

Funny thing is, I only really started looking at and comparing real and fake ricks about a week ago. Last night, what I now consider a poor fake popped up on a local sale-site. Dude claimed it 100% real, and very good condition for about 1000€. I saw it right away. Bridge was wrong, the back of the neck was wrong, looked set, plus more minor details. Kinda funny, because a week ago I would probably have fallen for it! The guy literally said "No it's real, it's a chinese rickenbacker". I thought that was just a running joke.. My guess is it was a rockinbetter with a swapped TRC. Do they still make those?

Again, thanks for all the info, I'll do my best to get more pics, and/or get em for a decent price!
