  1. Ive fallen foul of their QC with another bass i owned... 'twas a brand new 4003 which was the most amazing easy neck id ever played on... Then the paint started coming away at the bridge! Had to go back to the shop, very disappointing as i still havent played one with a neck as good, and that includes the two currently sitting in my house,

I dont see it is an elite club either really, if they feel and sound right to you then you owe it to yourself to get one :)

The best advice i could give would be to try a few out. Just like any brand there are some right old dogs out there, but you might just stumble across something amazing. The second bit of advice i would give would be to buy a second hand one from BC as they tend to keep their value quite well, so you wont lose out financially id you decide its actually not for you.

Of course if the one you played in the shop is brand new, and its *The One* then... Well... You know what to do ;)

Here's a pic of the neck date stamp on my '64 Precision.

Given my date of birth is 5 Nov 64, I had to go for it!

    Thats awesome fella!

Im a 79... Really really wanted a 79' Burgundyglo Ric... Could never find one, quite a few 80' and 78' but never 79'... So ended up with one from 02' instead - lol.

Although a 79' in Jetglo is appealling :)

  3. Id be a bit careful with the Jazzes as the last two i tried in the shop buzzed like buggery on the A string. Perhaps a good setup would help it out, but these two were completely different and had the same issue. Precision was fine tho.

  4. I think the whole thing looks like a Ric, thats what made me go "ummm??" - lol

A shop near me has some of them in stock WITH a genuine Ricky... if I dont decide to have beer on my lunch break ill pop in and give them both a go.

  5. Well well - I can actually say yes I have! Played it the other day in PMT Norwich. Was the short scale version. Nice and "honky".

For me it was just great! Reminded me of my old Gibson Les Paul Triumph. You can really fly about on that neck. The one I played was a jetglo black one, really lovely finish. The acoustic sound out of it was pretty warm, not the loudest but they never are, are they?

I think it was a little overpriced for what it was (something over £800?) but it was the bass I had the most fun on in the shop for sure.

  6. SImple question - How can these guys get away with making the best Ric fakers ive seen and they get sold in shops, yet Ric "seem" to be more interested in going after people doing private deals for old 70's and 80's fakers?

Dont know if its ever been discussed so please enlighten me! By the way yes I own two Rics and I love them, but I really dont care about people making / selling fakers etc - hardly affects the sale of Fenders and Gibbo's from what ive seen:)

  7. Ahghghghghghhhh this must have dropped price while I was away at Oktoberfest getting drunk without a computer! And the pickguard had already been changed to black... exactly what I want to do to one when I get one... curses!

Well done whoever got this... lovely bass.

  8. IMO you cant beat a Ric. They just float my boat and you can get a lot more tones out of them than just 'clank'.

I do agree that you should try a few out though. I tried a load of old ones that were going for silly money and all but one played like sh*t (possibly not helped by the fact most shops dont seem to actually set up 2nd hand instruments that they are trying to sell) and eventually bought a 2011 4003 which was fantastic. That had to go back to Ric due to a flaky paint issue sadly so had to hunt again and took a punt on the one i have now without playing it first (had 30 day money back promise though) and it plays great.

I would disagree that the colour doesnt matter, it matters a lot to me. Unless you intend to buy another one later ;) My first Ric was only bought cos it was the right price, not the right colour... Cracking bass though, still got it.

  9. Id go with

    1) Rick 4003 - in particular the 2011 ones. Best bass ive ever played. If not try another 4003, there are good and bad ones out there... Ive been pretty lucky with mine. My 4003 went in for service recently... I was lost without it, when it returned, so did my "mojo" - lol. Much more versatile than people give them credit for, 2 PU's and separate tone pots means a wide range of tones, plus stereo etc.
    2) The Doodle - some of you may have played this! Dan's Shuker is amazing : i really do not dig ERB's at all but that plays like butter and sounds phenomenal. Go see him at a bassbash :D
    3) Fender P Standard - much like Ronseal in that it does what it says on the tin. If you cant gig with one of these you probably should consider switching to another instrument... ;-)
    4) Gibson Les Paul Bass - the old Triumphs. An experience indeed to play one of these, does the EB3 sound but also successfully impersonates a Precision if you fiddle with it a bit! Looks incredibly cool too. Downside? Weighs as much as the USS Nimitz.
    5) Wal - Ive never played one, so im intrigued!
