1. For anyone else setting up an Ibanez bass: Here's a pdf you can download. It covers all the parts on all the bases they sell, bridges, EQ etc. and gives you instructions on how to set up your instrument for the best action and intonation. Very handy if you're new at setting up a bass and unsure how to proceed. 2. Mea culpa. And I naively thought I was the only one who did that! Nice to know I'm not alone. I try to force myself to play "properly" but I've had problems for years trying to play with a plectrum. (Until recently - the Dunlop Stubby 2mm is MY pick!) so I just unconsciously played the guitar like a bass - fairly successfully for most things, it has to be said. It's a habit I can't break either, although for some things there's really no choice. But mostly, yea. I'm far more comfortable using a guitar like a bass.

Keep posting and enjoy! best, bert
I never do things in the right order. Thanks for the welcome, Bert.

Since I've technically been a member of this forum for four years, I thought it was about time I got round to an introduction since I seem to have been fairly remiss in that area. Especially as I've recently come out of lurk mode. I'm a lady cat originating from Scotland but currently lurking in among the mad dogs and Englishmen who don't fear the midday sun. Utterly barking! (Pardon the pun.) As a ginge, the sun and I have a tentative understanding. It hides for most of the year and the rest of the time, I lurk in the shadows shaking my fist in its direction and uttering profanities under my breath. I first picked up a bass about ten years ago but didn't seriously start playing until 2008. And even then, my time with the deep side has been a bit choppy as that silly "life" thing got in the way, resulting (at one point) in the lamentable sale of my beloved Peavey Fury, so I've been a start and stop player for most of this time. Fortunately I can give it more attention now and, I confess, I've flitted back and forth between bass and six string for a while, but my obvious talent lies with the bass - and I get much more fun from playing it than anything else. So here I am, out of the proverbial, as it were. I am bassist, hear me roa... mew. ~~ Hazel
  6. Great news! Sounds like you've got yourself well kitted into the bargain. Enjoy the gig.
  7. Not so much the dark side as the deep side. Another thumbs up for the Ibanez camp here. I just landed myself a sweet deal on an SR300 and am loving it to bits. Cracking bass, that. And I wholeheartedly agree with those who suggest that the slim, fast neck of the Ibby Soundgear's would be a benefit to a guitarist moving to bass.
I'd just like to say bass isn't just a rhythm instrument. You can play melodically too. Bass is a part of harmony!
Absolutely. I always see the bass as the bridge which brings both melody and rhythm together. It was my love of both these things which led me to the bass which allows you to do both at once. I've heard many breathtaking melodic bass solos. And most bass riffs use their own melody to enhance and add that third dimension to a song. And remember, while lead guitarists would have you believe they alone hold the audience in the palm of their hands, it's the groove which makes their arses move.
  8. My real irrational like is Doctor Who. Which isn't irrational at all, really, as it's quite brilliant and only enhances my Geek Chic. So there etc.
  9. Country and Western music. Yea, right! As if. Liking C&W is as irrational to me as liking...
Wasps
... which is obviously insane on acid!
Slapping (or so many of you guys would have me think) Ibanez SR300 range (ditto)
Hey, Ibby SR300's are teh sex.
  10. @Jonnyboy Since you mentioned the problem with achoring on the curved pups, I've just tried it. I don't have a problem anchoring on them at all, but that's probably because I have smaller thumbs than you. So yes, I appreciate that problem. I didn't hear any difference between them and the squared off ones, however so I'm not entirely sure why they were curved in the first place. Still, I'm not complaining because aesthetically, I like the curved ones. However, as I don't anchor, they can be mutated elephant shaped for all I care. I'm one of those people who "float" rather than anchor which may be why I didn't find anchoring on the curves a problem as I don't rely on putting any pressure there.
  11.
Thanks, Cat! A very informative post that was. Oh, and congrats with a steal! I gather new stock goes for near 300 quid, so this sounds like a very low price also in that respect.
Cheers. I do admit to feeling quite smug at the moment. It's not often I get a bargain.
  12. As it happens, I was in the market for an ibanez Soundgear (my girlie hands love the SR4 necks, and the lightweight body is a major bonus too) and I had a choice between the new models and one remaining 2010 Style Sweeper one. So today, I plopped my money down for the latter. The new pickups don't sound any different from the old ones (at least not to my ears) and I've kinda fallen for the Style Sweeper myself. That and I love the finish - Silver Sparkle. While some of the new finishes are quite nice - Candy Apple Red and Starlight Blue caught my eye - I do admit to liking a sparkle finish and I have a weakness for silver guitars/basses. It basically came down to three things: I do like the Style Sweeper, ditto on the finish and, to top it off, I got it for a load of money off because it's old stock - although it is a new bass. (I got it for £180.) All in all, a decent day's shopping. So, there are still people selling the old models. They're few and far between, but they can still be got. And unless GAK is using old pics and descriptions on their website, they're still selling the Style Sweepers too, although it'd pay to give them a call first in case they just haven't updated their site.
  13.
I love my micro cube but if that works for that price that has to be the way to go! Might get one and see if it'll run my PA system...
Ditto on the Micro cube. The size and weight factor is also a bonus for me. I have handbags bigger than this amp!
You can pick up a Roland Micro Bass for around £100 on here or other auction site etc. I sold mine a while ago for that. I didn't find it much good for passive bass & only 'reasonable' with active, no idea why 'cos the outputs of my passives are just as high it seems on other amps? The Roland 0nly takes 6 AA batteries, even high capacity NiMh rechargeable cells ain't going to give you long - not if you're going to try keeping up with a guitar through a 10 Watt. I enquired re running off a 12V car battery but all I got was - "that would invalidate any warranty" - even with a voltage dropper. The PJB is what you really need, I'd suggest saving for one, maybe next year
I find the batteries last a while on my micro cube - and I break the rules, as it were, and use rechargeables (which Roland don't advise you do). Unless you're going to crank it up full and use a lot of effects, battery life is great. I've got 6+ hours out of one set of rechargeables - and that was using fairly high volume and effects. You get much longer if you tone it down a bit. I usually play off mains at home but I've used the rechargeables to test battery life a few times and it's pretty consistent. Love my Micro Cube RX. Since I got it, my poor Hartke's been sadly neglected.
