1. "Back in the day" I used one of these, and the only thing that would cope with the output was a 4x12" 200 watt cab. A friend in a local Band STILL uses a 100 watt example, and it drives two 4x12" cabs up to rather astounding volumes with no farty noises whatsoever.

(Edit for stupid spelling mistakes) :)

  2.
I've had a similar problem with my AH350SMX. It's definitely the SMX 12 band pre-amp and clearly has a 350W power stage, but I can't find any information specific to it. There's the manual covering the AH300SMX and AH400SMX, but nothing on the 350. Weird.
Join the flipping club! I've had the same amp for the last 12 years, and in all that time, I haven't been able to find ANY information on it either. :) They don't exist, really.

  3.
We all used Marshall back then, but the world of bass has moved on and they seem to have been left behind.
Yep. Sold mine as well. Not many people seem to want the "Old School" sound from a Bass these days. :)

  4. Unfortunately, I think this is one you will have to work out yourself. Nobody on here has your ears, so it's difficult telling you how to get "your" sound. I had to do precisely what you are suggesting, and booked an extra hour at the rehearsal rooms, before the Band turned up. Even then, I still find myself making little "tweaks" at every Gig I play, because the acoustic qualities of the rooms tend to differ to some extent. I love my Trace, and when I finally got the sound I was looking for, nothing else seemed to come close. Enjoy the quest! :)

  5.
Looks like you are hanging out in an office while the accountants behind you get on with their work.
Oh, yes. The 'good old days' of Resident Bands in Working Mens Clubs. Everybody sat down! :)

  6. Hofner Artist. It felt "right" when I tried it out in the shop, (I was only 13!) and it served me as my gigging Bass until I bought my first Precision 5 years later. Beware! Black and white '60's photography alert! :)

  7. I played one of these in a FREE Tribute Band, because I couldn't get away with the short scale on an EB3. It was NIIIIIICE! :) A lot more sounds available as well, but still a touch of neck-dive. Mine just had a boring black scratchplate, though.

  8.
...fair enough... but which bloody ones???
As many as you can comfortably manage. :) Start with all the major scales, then when you've got these off pat, get fancier as the mood takes you. Running down a major scale (when you've got the space to do it) during a song, sounds pretty good, and impresses most guitards. Mind, it doesn't take much to keep THEM happy.

  9. Sounding like you're out of tune means you are frying your ears with proximity and volume!!!!! Have a look around the Site for "earplugs" threads, and invest in a pair as soon as possible. You'll probably find that a decent pair will 'take the edge' off the higher frequencies in Guitar/Vocals/Drums as well, allowing you to hear yourself better. :)

and no.....this is not an 'old fart' reply. This is from someone with severe tinnitus from years in Rock Bands. Protect your lugholes, you only get one pair.

  10. I had been recruited into NWOBHM Band "FIST" in 2004. As part of the 'comeback tour' we drove from Newcastle to Butlins in Bognor Regis to appear at a "Rock Night." The Staff were lined up to help us unload the truck, we did the soundcheck (to some worried looks) :) and retired to the Chalets for a couple of beers until Gig Time. Imagine EVERYONES surprise when we stood on stage, broke into 'Name, Rank and Serial Number', the massive curtains opened, and we were greeted by the sight of 5,000 people dressed in sparkly wigs and jumpsuits. It was a "Glam-Rock" night! You just HAVE to love promoters, don't you?

  11.
hi all.
i spotted a pj copy in the local crack converters. It has "AXE" on the headstock and thats about it.
I cant find any info on the web about it,any of you guys know if its worth a trip back to town to have another look.
    thanks in advance.
Stay in the house and save the bus fare/petrol. I got one of these piles of poo in the '80's, simply to get "back on the road" with a Glen Miller type Band. When I moved on, and actually had to learn to move my fingers a bit more, I got rid of it. I couldn't get a real PJ Precision quickly enough. I sold it for £20 to a kid who "wanted to learn Bass". One month later, he gave it to his kid brother, and bought a "decent" copy. 2 months later, the kid brother threw it in a skip! :)

  12.
Ahh, the magic of youtube! Digging the vids!

Actually, this is me on guitar, the bass ones have never been put on youtube :)

No idea how to embed the clip, tried the other day with one, failed miserably!

For RUSH fans only, I suppose. http://youtube.com/watch?v=MxqIVtHPCgA
Take the bit after the "=" sign. In your case, it will be MxqIVtHPCgA. Stick after it. Sorted!

    There you go.

  13. Some of us don't have the option. Before Health and Safety cottoned on to loud noises being rather detrimental to your ears, I worked for a LOT of years without earplugs. I can't hear an unplugged Bass well enough to hear if my technique is slipping, so I plug in every time. I have a crap practise amp, (as postulated in an above post) but all it's there for is to let me hear the notes I'm playing, and HOW I'm playing them, not "Get My Sound." I leave that until I get to a Gig, and EQ for the room I'm playing on the night.

Just as an after thought. A very good friend of mine took his brand-new Bass (which shall remain nameless-I am flaming nobody) straight from a professional set-up by a Luthier to a Gig. On plugging in, we were both surprised to hear a stunningly loud crackle (poor soldering) and a rather annoying fret buzz around the 9th fret. These two noises made the Bass unplayable for that night, and he had to resort to his 'Old Faithful.' :) Ten seconds plugged into an amp would have saved him a lot of embarrasment, so practising plugged in seems to be a nice way of checking for any 'issues' your pride and joy might develop over its playing life.

    Just my two penn'orth.
