Definitely not related to any other equipment interference? I find my bass uke hisses a bit when my fluorescent desk lamp is on.

That’s interesting thanks ped. Does the interference disappear once you’re away from the fluorescent lamp or if the lamp is switched off?

in my case the interference seems to stay for a while regardless of other factors as far as I can tell

what I’ve not tried is testing whether my mobile phone could be causing it. If it is a phone causing it does seem odd that it’s not widely reported issue.

I can’t say for sure, I’ve tried in different rooms in the house and it’s still there - this morning in a room where I had no other electrical items switched on.

could a mobile cause interference maybe?

  3. I bought a Kala U-bass recently, new, and it’s been great mostly....a couple of weeks after I bought it, a hiss developed which sounds like low level white noise which was rather annoying especially if through headphones, which is how I use it most. A few weeks later the hiss disappeared and it was nice and quiet and back to normal (no idea why).

i took it back to the shop, to ask them to see if they could find out what might be causing it. They couldn’t find anything, perhaps understandable given I took it in when there was no noticeable problem.

They hypothesised (spuriously it turns out) that it was probably my amp....anyway a week later the noise comes back! And so I took it straight back to the shop for another look. I waited a few days and apparently the noise had disappeared again!
Bought a new small combo (not just to test this out, I was buying it anyway!) and then while playing the hiss kicks in and really noticeable again. so annoying! The techs at the shop just don’t seem to have an idea of what it could be and I think they think I’m making it up 😕

i have returned to the shop who are sending it to Kala for a look, but the shop are saying that if Kala can’t find anything I won’t be able to return it!
I see their point but it is an intermittent problem which to be honest is all the more annoying because it is so unpredictable.
Has anyone had a similar issue?

I have a B Social and a PJB Suitcase. The PJB is leaps and bounds ahead of the Ashdown in terms of build quality, the Ashdown is  strictly a stay at home amp. I like Ashdown gear (I've had a lot of it) but the lack of any physical speaker protection completely rules out using a B Social for any kind of gigging situation, something will end up going through the speaker, either in the car or at a venue. Even putting it in a non rigid case would wreck it. The PJB gear is built for gigging, the Ashdown stays at home looking pretty for practicing and the PJB gets slung in and out of cars, vans and venues without having to worry.

The lack of speaker cover on the b-social was exactly the reason I chose the pjb as it gives the option of using it outside the house if I want to. If I could have bought both I would have! But had to choose one and very pleased with the cub so far 🙂

Nice. I've been promising myself a Cub when I have spare funds. I have several PJB cabs already. Been thinking I could use the Cub and slave it to a power amp to drive additional cabs.

The flexibility of combining with the powered cabs is pretty useful!

  6. I was looking for a smallish but good quality practice amp, mainly for my Kala U-bass, and I trawled the bass sites and discussions on here for ideas.
I really liked the idea of the ashdown B-social, despite what people have said about it (in fact looking at Yamaha’s latest THR wireless offerings, which requires additional purchase of wireless gear, the high price of the b-social doesn’t look so bad now ...£465 at pmt). I was really tempted as it has loads of great features and pretty much stood alone in terms of this, perhaps until yamaha launches its latest product.

However I realised I wanted something that didn’t have to have all the features under the sun...I wanted 2 inputs, reasonably small size but high quality bass sound were mainly what I wanted....ive had a blackstar ID core beam in the past which was fine for messing around on the guitar but playing a bass through sounded too ‘modelled’ and not substantial (not knocking as it was a decent product for the price)

I noticed phil jones has recently released an updated bass cub released this year. I’ve heard a lot about these things and always been interested just always had other priorities.
No dealers near to me to try much out so I ordered it on a whim from bass direct. It is a bit dearer than I was going to spend, but I’m glad I did.
The quality is superb, very robustly made. Sounds fantastic and the U-bass sounds great through. And it’s so tiny!
I still think the ashdown is an interesting prospect, I just wanted something that will travel well, and the phil jones bass cub is just so reassuringly sturdy.

I’d not seen much posted anywhere about the new model, so just thought I’d share!image.thumb.jpg.e4fe60990376594c960a323bf6682ad4.jpg

The Ashdown site used to say 8 hours then the reviews were saying that’s inaccurate, so maybe they changed it

Seems like the most likely explanation...bit of a shame really, as it pretty close in price to the pjb BH-1 which supposedly can manage 8 hours playback!

  8. I’ve been looking at the ashdown tone pocket online at various outlets (pmt, gear4music etc) which all state it has 8 hour battery life....yet ashdown website says it has 2 hours battery life! Does anyone have one who might know which one is right?!

  9. A singer [Molly] and a guitarist in the Salford area are looking for a bassist. They are currently working on original songs (already have 8 atm). Influences are quite varied starting from blues to alternative genres like stoner, shoegaze, psychedelia and dreampop. They are based in Salford and need someone who can commit to weekly practice, want to help with songwriting and are keen to get on stage ASAP.

[i worked with my Molly in a band we were in together...she’s great and I would have filled in but I’m currently in 2 bands already so sadly don’t have the time]

if anyone is interested, get in touch 👍

    Oh dear... 🙂

Thanks, I've been keeping an eye out for a s/h one to try, but as you say, they're quite rare...even rarer in white, which is the only colour I'd want...

I had to go for a black one (new) as there were no white ones available anywhere at the time...still love it mind, but would have loved a white one too!

Just to chip in with my 2p...I think Yamaha suffered with the pricing of the old 202x series because they were the ultimate 'sleeper' bass: I played one for a good while at Bass Direct when they first came out, and it was the best thing I've played in there when it came to feel and tone. Very very nice indeed - whatever voodoo they were doing, it certainly produced a terrific bass. As we've already said, though, it's hard to distinguish visually between their flagship (IIRC they were about £2400 at first, then dropped to £1600 when retailers started unloading them a year or so later) and their entry level basses some £2k less, and I think this was the problem.

I'm still unsure as to whether to pursue a 2024 (the reunion gig I bought the 414 (and a 1024x) for was a success, and we're playing some bigger gigs next year, so I can justify it), because I still don't know about the neck profile: I sold the 1024x because the 414 had a slimmer neck, and that's become a deal breaker for me over the last few years, and I don't know about the 2024 neck profile vs the 1024. If they're the same, I guess I'll save myself a big chunk of cash, because the 414 is just fine. Back in the day, I had a BB3000A (I'd have another of those, too, but the prices are daft now) and a backup BB300, and I never minded using the 300, as that was a great bass, too...

I had a 1024x and a 2024x (still got the latter) and I found the 2024x neck to be slightly slimmer and more comfortable and also because the finish is a bit nicer and has a more played in feel I think. Both great, maybe you should try one again to see 😀 I ended up selling the 1024x for funds and space, as I couldn’t bare to part with the 2024x given they don’t come up for sale much anymore ....and I still love playing it

  12. Regarding trading up to a bb2024/5, I first got a bb1024x, love it still and remains a firm fixture for me. I was lucky enough to have some extra cash to get a BB2024x ....and although there is a large uplift in cost, the refinements are quite marked difference that give it a great feel and you feel the quality and workmanship when played. The similar pickups and hardware only tell half the story.....my bb2024x is considerably lighter than my 1024x (the lighter weight makes it much more comfortable), the neck a touch thinner making it even more playable for me, and the finish is just fantastic.  Not forgetting that the sustain is unreal! Just comparing the specs won't tell you the real differences.

I wanted to buy the P34 but in the end opted for the 2024x over the P34 because of how great the former played and felt, and as they were no longer being made I didn't want to miss out on the chnace to own one.

But as most of thread probably agrees, all the yamaha BBs offer something fantastic regardless of which one!
