1.
I'm not sure that's the case. That guy has been working on it for ages now and still hasn't even got a working model. There's a lot of mouth but not much trouser going on in that Talkbass thread.

The thing to remember is the Wal pickup works in a perfect symbiotic relationship with it's preamp. Both are ingenious and devilishly complicated to reverse engineer because of their complexity.
he's got a prototype ready...

  2.
For those who need a Wal bass that's the price they are take it or leave it. For those who just want a custome bass there are plenty of other luthiers that can build you something of quality for less. None of them will will have all the features that make a Wal bass what it is though.
this. although theres a poster over on talkbass who's currently reverse engineering a wall pickup/preamp so he can build his own version. you'll be seeing wal soundalikes soon.....

  3. Someone was looking for this in the items wanted section last week but never got back to me, so its up for sale.

Its in excellent condition as it was only used at home a few times before going into storage. one of lesser condition had a BIM on ebay recently of £140 stg, as they're rare, so im gonna start there. it does not have the powersupply

i'll also take in trade (part or full) any of the following

any black hardware for a geddy jazz (machine heads, pickguard, plates bridge etc)

    any decent jazz pickups/preamps

any decent pickup/preamps for an OLP levin.

pics can be uploaded if needed

  4. my first decent amp back in the late 90's was an all silver trace elliot 2x10 200w combo. i believe it could be considered a gp12 as it had a 12 band graphic (with the red low b frequency) but i've never seen one before or since, and i've never found any info on them. i traded it in for an ashdown evo 500 4x10 combo in 2002 and, while i loved the ashdown, i still to this day miss that trace. the speakers may have been nearing the end of their life, but it had mojo.

does this model ring any bells with anyone? apart from mine, every trace i've seen was green. i'd love to know the history of them.

  5. Sounds like the strings have helped. I dont use slinkys, are they nickel? i've always found nickel strings go duller quicker for me, which is why i'll always use steels if i can, i also prefer the sound of them.

for a tool-esque sound you'll need to dial in more mid, your treble seems fine, and also some kind of preamp/od to add a little grit. we're not talking full on distortion, just something left on all the time to give it some bite (justin from tool uses a rat)

    hope that helps.

  6. i got a schecter studio 4 fretless in a trade last year, but to be honest it got very little use. i've been trying to shift it locally for the past few months with no takers, but a guy is willing to take a look at it in exchange for an olp levin. I used to use a SR5 years ago (but it wasnt a good one, but i digress) and i'm fond of narrow string spacing, and i'd probably use a 5 string more.

    I've never played a levin, but i think i'd like it......should i do it?

  7. I'm lefty playing righty. there was an old beat up righty acoustic in my house growing up, and the only thing i knew from watching others play was that the scratchplate was on the bottom, so thats how i picked it up. i cant play lefty to save my life.

drums are different, i can play basic beats right handed, bit if i were to ever take up drums seriously it'd be right foot bass, left hats, and open handed with remote hats and ride on the right side!

as for famous players, gary sinese (CSI, forrest gump) plays bass, but he's a righty. his bands called LT. DAN i think!

  8. I'm in a kings of leon tribute band.......as the lead guitarist! (bass job was taken) so you get an idea of how hard the lead is, even a bassist can do it! i wasnt much of a fan before joing the band, but i do like most of the tunes we play. to be a KOL tribute and NOT play SOF is criminal....our drummer has trouble with the intro too, its that pesky offbeat.

  9. Just thought i'd round up the ladies for a group photo....

98 3eq Stingray (main bass), Westbury Track 2 (restoration project), Schecter Studio 4 fretless, Washburn AB-34

Geddy Assembly project, geddy body, allparts neck, gonna put stingray pickup in the bridge and all black hardware.

80's Riverhead Unicorn (restoration project) dunno what i'm gonna do with this colourwise, was thinking a metallic black with a stingray pickup....

  10. ....shops did "packs" for bassists who wanted to change the appearence of their basses?

for example, i'm assembling a geddy type jazz with black hardware, but it'd be great if i could buy a pack containing a black guard, plates, bridge, heads etc.

i was lucky enough that when i was in the states a while back i was in a store that sold dimarzio spares so i picked up black neck screws, and pickguard screws.

you'd be amazed at how something small like screws can have an effect on the look of a bass. i was gonna go with a black guard, but i got a white one to tide me over, and the black screws really set it off. now i'm torn between a single ply black guard or a white pearl!

anyone know of anywhere that does packs like that?
