1. The main thing about this setup is one word - thick. It's so punchy in the middle and defined that you can't escape it, it glues everything together. I've slimmed right down to just my distortion going in the front, turn the tweeter up to -2dB(never did that on my Peavey 4x10 back in the day, too harsh) and I get the definition in the top and it's just simply insane. I'm gonna swap out the driver for a 12AU7 to reduce the gain on Channel 2(I Y cable the channels) and I think it'll be even better then. If you can get anything Mesa, I say go for it!

  2. It's surprisngly light, the 400+ is lighter than my old rack setup and the 6x10" is more portable than my Ampeg fridge, not that I'm bothered about that stuff I'm a roadie on the side haha.

I scored the lot 2nd hand for £1350 having sold all my other bits for £1100. I started out wanting to buy an Ampeg SVT4 and this is how I ended up!

  3. So I completely re-hashed my rig.....sold my Ampeg SVP-Pro (to BassJamm), my QSC PLX1602, my Samson Powerbrite (Both to Finbar), my dbx166xl compressor/gate(on Ebay), and my Ampeg 8x10(to Matt), here is my new rig:

2000 Mesa 400+ & 1st generation Powerhouse 6x10(no player control network, only tweeter control). Signal chain goes Bass-> Korg DTR-2-> I banez PD7-> 400+ -> Powerhouse 6x10. All Planet Waves cables.

Sounds good? You bet it does. I'll never go back to Ampeg, hate to say it but for my needs and ear the tone just doesn't stack up.

No real reason to get rid of this, except I'm raising cash to buy the Mesa 6x10 that is on here to go with my 400+ and make my dream rig After rehearsing today I was tempted to keep it but I can;t really argue.

The cab is the classic 8x10 fridge, US made(if that matters) with inputs to run mono 4 Ohms or stereo 2 x 8 Ohms, 800W RMS power handling. I've looked after the cab since I first got it, it has a couple of tiny chips in the tolex that I've repaired but that's it. Sounds great, looks great and will fit in the back of a Corolla, surprisngly. It comes with a Speakon lead, a Bass Hanger to put on top and give a convenient place to hang your plank, and an official Ampeg 8x10 cover that cost me £60. Nothing else really needs to be said, a world reknowned cab!

The trickiest part of buying an 8x10 is actually getting it, so you're welcome to pick it up from Dewsbury(where I rehearse), Manchester(where I live), we can meet somewhere, or I can deliver for petrol money.

    £500 for the above mentioned!

    Cheers,

    Dan

  6.
How so? I've forgotten the reason from your older posts, so tell me again. :)
Well a compressor works on detecting peaks in signal, and then reducing that signal. However, low frequencies especially in bass guitar usage are prominent and contain more energy than the high frequencies. Hence the low frequencies will trigger the compressor and squish the signal, but with the Contour button, the compresor ignores the low frequencies and hence all the information that is happening down there. This cleans up your low end and allows you to really work the compressor on the highs, which is what gets rid of finger noise and other such stuff.

  8. The fire sale continues. After using my Bass 400+ for my first practice with it today, I realised that I don't need my compressor any more. The gate isn't used as my distortion is blended in the FX loop and there's no noise, and I don't need the compressor as the tubes do that for me. So I'm saving space and clearing out some air vent room for the tubes, and this is up for grabs. It's transparent and served me very well when I had my QSC, great for adding punch, cutting out noise and is just a great piece of kit. It's in brand new condition, racked since day one.

    Features:
Goof proof operation to smooth uneven levels, add sustain to guitars, fatten drums or tighten up mixes
New gate timing algorithms ensure the smoothest release characteristics
    Program-adaptive expander/gates
Great sounding dynamics control for any type of program material
Separate precision LED displays for gain reduction, compression threshold and gate threshold allow quick, accurate setup
    Stereo or dual-mode operation
Balanced inputs and outputs on 1/4" TRS and XLR
    Side Chain insert
    Classic dbx® "Auto" mode

£100 with £5 shipping, kettle plug included.

    Cheers,

    Dan

  9.
I'm not after any trades for bass stuff, I am cutting back on most of my gear as I dont play enough to keep it all any more. I'll be selling all of my gear at some point (minus my Jazz), then make a reasonable little combo, so I have something to play when the increasingly rare urge takes me.

I'm intreasted in trades/sawps for any P.A gear (not speaekrs tho). Its a long shot but I would also listen to trades for a Festool TS55 or a nice table saw (startrite, wadkin, ect).

That is a great price Dan, I'll be thinking again about selling this if thats the typical price atm.

    Cheers

I don't think it's typical at all, I'd say it's more like £700-£800 myself. That's why I'm lucky to get one!

  10.
I do quite fancy this....

Are you looking for anything in trade?
I stole one fo these from Ebay for £660 including shipping, I heartily endorse this product!

  11.
Thinking about getting a 1u rear mounted 13 amp PDU instead. More versatile than IEC sockets. And I don't really NEED the light ;p
I used one of these for a bit but they're no good if you try and plug big power adaptors into them for FX, or step down transformers for US gear, as the plugs are too big and won't fit over the edge of the rack case. If you mount them lower in the rack they stop you getting to DI outs etc, and IEC's are generally neater I find.

I'm going back to a good old surge protected, switchable 4-way, zip tied into the back of my rack, so I can't really espouse neatness haha!

  12.
I think I'll pass actually, I'nm just getting tempted by shiny lights I can't really afford :) Good luck with the sale

The stuff that's come out of this rack is in very good condition though people, buy from Dan with confidence
Ahh go on man, you know you want to do what I do and plug in 1 AC lead, 1 speaker lead and your guitar lead, press a switch and then play!

  13. Very top bit of rack in that image. It's a Samson surge protector with a built in rack light, has 10 IEC outlets and a pop-out fluorescent light that is extremely bright. You turn all the outlets on with one switch and go. Has a circuit breaker built in that stops your fuses popping, and you get gels for the front window to change the colour (red, blue and purple included). Unswitched socket on the front for running constant power stuff (handy for laptops).

Is in new conditon as it has been racked since the day I bought it. Only selling because I just bought a Mesa Bass 400+ and need an extra rack space. Manual included. I'll include a few IEC male to female connectors and some IEC to 3-prong plug sockets too (made these for some stuff I used to own that had fixed power leads, such as a Sansamp PSA-1).

Main benefit of these things is you only need one wall socket to plug a rack's worth of stuff in to!

    £50 with £5 shipping.

  14.
Haha, is it me, or does there seem to be a lot similar sales regarding this power/pre stuff between the same people, meaning everyone gets what they want recently? I'm liking it :)
SOLD to Finbar!

  15.
It doesn't get any better than SVT=8X10", but you do need a bloody big van and rodies.
King Tuts' Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, if ever you have played there you will know that a full SVT rig is the last thing you want to be owning.
I actually got my 8x10 in the back of a Corolla the other day, and I'm a roadie myself so I don't notice! Getting it into the 13th Note was hard enough. :)

  16.
I'm missing mine already. :)

Bassjam is after one of these, great price and a killer rig you have there my son.

What cabs do you punish with that beast?
Just a lone SVT810E. It's enough!

I was contemplating getting a 610HLF as a change from the 8x10, but after having no joy I did a gig on an SVT2 into an 8x10 and decided to just go full-bore rockstar Ampeg setup - hence the Ampeg head desire.
