1. I'll admit, I go for the tab first - it's ideal if you're attempting to pick something up quickly.

A useful little tool I use is Guitar Pro. It's great for working out how the various parts fit together and the interplay of the instruments. It's not pure tab, as it does also display the music - which I find is essential for nailing timings, and is a useful bit of discipline.

I tend to find that I'll see what people have come up with, then listen to the track, and blend the two together. Ultimately, you've got to play it; so you need to make it yours. I think people tend to just opt for replaying the original.

  2. Finally, having bought house, car and wedding the wife has allowed me back my wallet

I was feeling relatively flush, so I dived into our local music house. I'd been flirting with their MIM Fender Jazz for some time. Could this be the day?

But... The Classic Vibe intervened. I'd struggle to smuggle a grand's worth of bass past the wife, but the £400-odd of the MIM is manageable; the £300 of the Vibe is genius!

It's s great player, loved it; loved them both. But I couldn't tell them apart.

At this rate I'll be keeping the money. I can't work it out.

  3. The natural recourse would be to turn up at the next gig decked in corpse paint, like some kind of Celtic Frost tribute act.

Simply claim you thought they'd asked for you to look interesting - hey presto!

  4. Bits of that video are on Youtube, if anyone's interested in seeing just how wasted they actually are! :)

  5. I was simply pointing out options, Kets, so far as I knew them - I'm not pretending to mind-read the buyer, as to his intentions or otherwise :)

On the question of intent, might this not then fall under the definition of recklessness? I know this much from my time in the insurance business. Ok, so you didn't want to cause harm; but you knew you would; so hey.

Guess than it would be question of whether he genuinely intended to pay, or not?

That perhaps rings a little more true - but, again, without the power of mind-reading (and a good nights sleep, I'm going fuzzy at the edges) i'm happy to leave it

I hope the OP does take up our suggestions of some civil action, if this chap doesn't get in touch. I'd love to think it was simply an accident of circumstances, but the attempted re-sell doesn't bode well. The amount might not be huge, but the principle is realling niggling - just who the f*** does this kind of thing?

Too late for my brain to work on any level, so time for me to duck!

  6. @Thepurplebob - oops, yeah - I see that you mention deception. I still think he might have a case; if not to do more than prod the 'buyer' with.

If this chap convinced the OP that he was intending to pay, as a basis for securing the property, it would be reasonable to assume he deceived the OP - from what little I know.

I agree that the civil matter would be the easiest to pursue. But the OP has options, I think :)

  7. Some bed-time reading on deception offences:

    http://www.claimerfraud.co.uk/deception.ppt

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deception_(cr..._by_a_deception

Just a quick start - sorry, I haven't had the time to look much further. I'm going for a booze with one of our corporate lawyers tomorrow, they might know something more. Not their field, mind.

Come to think of it, I was bantering with EdwardMarlowe on that Emin thread in 'Off Topic' - he's a legal academic. Must be worth a punt (if he's not already commented, sorry Ed!) surely?

  8. My legal understanding is limited, but are the deception offences not seperate to the theft offences for just this purpose?

Whilst this isn't theft, this individual has obtained property by deception - with the appropriate causality (i.e. send the bass, I'm making the payment now) - so how is this not a legal matter?

I think the police have it all wrong, in this instance. In any case, it doesn't sound as if they've had sufficient information to rule out a deception offence.

I would pursue the legal route instantly, both with a means to exploring the possibility of this being a genuine deception offence; and of securing the return of the property alongside appropriate redress. Appropriate redress should include an element of recompense for stress and inconvenience.

I helped a friend pursue a claim, which proved most satisfying. The repercussions go well beyond the simple recovery of the matter at hand - you're well into the realms of possibility for CCJs, and all other kinds of hang-ups. That would make it suitably hard to secure future employment; accomodation; credit.

Sounds like silly-billy could do with reminding of that. If times are hard now, they can suddenly get a lot harder.

  9. It was really a fantastic example. I get nervous holding nice things - I am aware that, stripped of suit and tie, I revert to being some kind of neanderthal. Whilst I love my basses, they are very definitely players, not trophies. Anything that can't cope with soaking a pint up isn't going to work.

It was shiny, new, and felt good. A little hard sell would have killed me.

  10. No - not this time.

Sadly, I work in the same team as Mrs Gus - it would prove very difficult to sneak it into the office, and back home to the games room, without somehow alerting her. She is, after all, a devious beast!

Bloody tempted though. That was very nice.
