  1. Friends, just taken delivery of a very nice ex-demo Vintage YJ96MRJP (relic'd Pastoriottic fretless Jazz bass copy) and I didn't think £135 was too bad either. It's strung with some kind of roundwounds which are going to have to come off to save the fingerboard if for no other reason- I wonder what other owners/users/ fretless players put on theirs? My Vintage V4 P-bass has '54 LaBella Deep Talkin' flats which I love but a lighter set might be a good idea for this one..... cheers Ian
  2. ..........and on the studio take of Roundabout CS is doubling his bass line with a 6-string to give it more top. I'm almost ashamed to admit I know that........... )
  3. ..............for anyone worried about putting the heavy gauge '54 LaBella Deep Talkin' set on their bass, I put a set on a Vintage V4 P-bass copy about eighteen months ago, obviously had to tweak the truss rod at the time, but the neck hasn't moved a millimetre and no sign of any strain on anything........and the bass sounds smokin'!! cheers Ian

  5. Friends, I recently put a set of LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats on my Vintage V4 (and the neck has barely moved by the way). The strings sit slightly proud of the top of the nut. (There's no gap between the strings and the bottom of the individual slots, and they don't rattle or buzz from there). Does this matter? I mean could it cause any problem sound- or stress-wise? cheers Ian
  6. Friends, firstly I am no bass expert of any kind so please forgive me if I get anything wrong and feel free to ask. I bought this off ebay as a first bass and then about six weeks later I bought a Vintage V4 from this very site and I'm playing that and I'm not playing this and I can't afford to own two basses right now so it has to go. What can I tell you? The rather nice slightly sparkly red seems to be a refinish as there are a couple of small chips on the back edge of the smaller horn and it's blue underneath. The groovy customised scratchplate is nothing to do with me but the screws are all there if you want to replace it. Little bit of relief in the neck but I like it that way and anyway you'll probably want to set it up yourself. Everything works, seems to deliver good range of tones, strings are medium and fairly well used, I can throw in a lightly used set of lightish Rotosounds if you want. Couple of little imperfections consistent with being used but nothing significant. I think £75 is fair, postage at cost which is probably £15ish, or some alternative in view of the postal situation. I'm in south Devon if anyone's close enough to inspect/collect. cheers Ian [attachment=35663:DSCN1343.JPG][attachment=35664:DSCN1341.JPG][attachment=35665:DSCN1342.JPG]
  7. Just took some lightish gauge Rotosound roundwounds off my Vintage bass and installed a set of La Bella Deep Talkin' Jamerson flats. I'll obviously have to redo the intonation but the neck really hasn't moved much (check it again tomorrow tho') I don't notice they're a whole lot harder to play and they clearly push out some volume- had to turn down my bass to get a clean sound from the amp. Watch this space........... cheers Ian

  12. Anyone tried LaBella Deep Talkin' flats? What are they like?
  13. Hello all. Anyone ever put heavier strings onto a lower cost bass (eg Squier) and had to take them off cos the neck wouldn't stand it? (I appreciate you'd probably have to adjust the truss rod) (Thinking of trying some flatwounds) cheers Ian
  14. Hello all. What is the difference between a (typical) P-bass and a (typical) J-bass in terms of sound? thanks Ian
