This seems reasonable value and the same vintage as me https://jayrosen.com/collections/fender-basses/products/1965-fender-jazz-bass-blond
Oooft, that is very nice, and definitely a few grand less than others would be offering it for. Looking pretty original from the exterior, i.e. all the correct fittings for an L series and correct early 65 decal and placement, and worn in in a genuine way that Clive Brown couldn't replicate... Owner was clearly a serious knob-tweaker, they've worn the plating off the control plate! 😆
The Brazilian rosewood looks a bit fresh so I'm guessing they've done a bit of fretboard sanding as part of the refret... Always a bit of a shame as it usually removes the patina but perhaps there were some bumps and humps that needed to be addressed.

Quoting from that notreble marketing blurb
“By reducing tendon stress with Thumb Fin’s ergonomic design you will be able to more naturally focus on technique while optimizing joint health,”
Can't say i ever felt i needed a thumb rest, or needed one to reduce "tendon stress".
IMO it's going to encourage bad technique and make it likelier to increase stress by encouraging a static anchored position.
If you really want to focus on technique, this is not the answer.
Definitely agree, and floating thumb is definitely healthy technique in terms of right-hand fingering on the top three strings. A rest is very helpful if you're needing to hammer away on the E for any length of time though, although I find certain pickup tops are a bit too far away from the string, e.g. Precision

I think one of the best cheap thumbrest solutions is those adhesive rubber feet, like you get on the bottom of pedals. I got a load of black 3M rectangular ones for a few quid and use one on my stingray in the position of a jazz bass neck pickup.
Does the job, stays in place and, if you want to take it off, you can remove any glue residue with a little rubbing alcohol.
Doesn't look too bad either, especially on a black scratchplate. You can also get clear ones for other colours.

I have one of these and it's a hugely underrated, absolutely massive-sounding bass distortion.
Important to note that this is what Karnivool's Jon Stockman uses live for Simple Boy, so that'll give you an idea of what it's capable of...
GLWTS!

Not necessarily truly 'vintage' but what's everyone's thoughts on this tasty looking jazzer over at bass Bros:-
https://bassbros.co.uk/product/1982-fender-jazz-bass/
Down as an '82 but the Fender serial lookup thingy comes up as a '78. Not seen a bounded dot neck before and as someone who is a recent jazz convert and looking for a nice older bass this is ticking a few boxes!
Classic and Cool Guitars had a black dot bound S8 Jazz Bass a while ago, so it is definitely a thing - https://classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/portfolio/s8-black-jazz/. I've not seen many of them though, so perhaps pretty rare.

Wow!! I love the Cog pedals (obviously, given my Cog obsession). What do each of them do, if you don’t mind me asking? I think I may have seen them on the Cog custom page when I was spending way too much time there.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about W&C and Neunaber reverbs too.
Yeah, the Cog pedals are great!
The Punisher one is a pretty basic Knightfall 66, from around when he first started making them. Has the diode selection and also a charge pump to run at 18v. I usually have this always on on channel A, low gain on MOSFET (left side), then use channel B for higher gain with germanium.
The Signor Gattino is the TK-421-X (Rat) with LM308 op amp, generally the same as the stock one except it has an HPF on the distortion, so you can get some interesting sounds if you combine it with the LPF on the clean.
I love the W&C TFR too. Tried pretty much every other tall font clone out there, including the EHX Green Russian, and nothing's beaten it in terms of the power and low end it puts out. Sounds absolutely massive stacked through the gattino!- 1

The current setup and highly unlikely to change anytime soon, just works perfectly.
Only addition will be an envelope filter at some point, which will either go above and after the Whammy, or in place of the XXL. A lot of deliberation on which one though, considering my first choice is rarely available and is hugely overpriced when it is, yet sells within minutes...

I also wondered about the truss rod/neck. The truss rod adjustment nut looks a bit worn, particularly given that it’s supposed to have been stored for 54 years, so all the action was in the first 7 years of its life. Was the reason it was put away all those years ago because there was a problem with the neck? Also, I see the strings are not tensioned so does that suggest a neck issue or is that just because it’s been in storage? It would be a punt without seeing it in the flesh.
Perhaps it's just me, but it always feels like a red flag when I see a recessed body-end truss rod nut.

Aguilar OBP-1 would be the ideal one I would suggest. It's what's in their DB-924/DB-925 external preamps and those sound perfect with Jazz Basses. Very similar to the Sadowsky pre, just a touch nicer sounding and more transparent to my ears.

What would you say the body wood was on that one to be so heavy
Think they generally used Northern American hard ash, also used for baseball bats...

This is a lovely looking Jazz from '78. Aged Olympic White, rosewood and blocks, lovely. Until..............you see the weight, 12 lbs 2.3 oz !!
Is that a record? I've never seen one that heavy.
The shop seems to have a number of basses on consignment.
Rob
My 75 Jazz is 12.35lbs...I've seen the odd late 70s bass get into the 13lb realm!

This guy imports a load of Fender Japan guitars, quite a few specials https://www.whitstableguitars.co.uk/.
No basses listed but he could probably get hold of them.

Interesting move to lacquer over the decal - are you aware that the 62 AVRI Jazz Basses have the waterslide decal sat on top of the lacquer and they didn't clear coat over them? This is period-correct as Fender didn't start lacquering over them until the late 60s, and it's why the edges of the decal were clearly visible!
Regardless, lovely job and looks great, good work! -
Love this! If only it was in the UK I would be very interested, but that import tax will be crazy 😩...GLWTS!

Just traded some 5 strings that I really wasn't playing enough and fancied an 'investment piece'. Pretty happy, a '78 USA Jazz. Quite heavy like a lot of them were, I had a '76 once and that was as heavy. To be fair my Elite isn't that far behind it. Anyway, colour?? Who knows...nearer Tropical Turquoise off the Fender colour chart. Pretty mint and plays nice, has the 70's slap tone when you hit it. Anyone know the colour for sure or have any other ideas??
Probably Maui Blue from the international colour range?

I thought matching headstocks were a custom option until the run in 1966 with the lollipop tuners. There’s tales of a few precision basses out there with a matching headstock too.
Although definitely rarer, it was possible to get a custom colour JB without a matching headstock. My Fiesta Red 65 has a tort plate and non-painted headstock from factory, and I know Martin Petersen from the Bass Gallery has/had one with identical spec. I've also seen quite a few other examples pop up at reputable vintage Fender retailers.
On the PB with matching headstock front, I'm sure Norm's Rare Guitars had one on their YouTube channel a while ago...- 1

A visit to Martin Petersen resulted in a straight neck, excellent playability and a happy customer.
So the truss rod works fine then? That was the main thing that was putting me off...Think you still would've beat me to it though!
It's real looker 😍 Very jealous! I'm properly on the lookout for a CAR, LPB or Dakota Red 65 or 66 at the moment...Congrats on the purchase!- 2

Pretty pricey but a really nice 66 P listed yesterday, haven’t seen many in this condition
https://reverb.com/uk/item/66852950-1966-fender-precision-bass-vintage-original
A bit cheaper on their website https://www.guncottonguitars.com/basses#/1966-fender-precision-bass. Still overpriced though, considering sunburst 66 jazz basses tend to be going for 8-9k from most other price-hiking UK dealers

That's definitely a slap stopper if ever I've seen one!

The control plate reminds me of a Musicman Sabre. It's definitely not stylish or pretty to mine eye regardless of the finish...

For me, Aeroplane is the perfect RHCP tune - catchy "radio-friendly" pop tune and great chorus, but with lovely slap on the verse and a cool bass solo. I still love everything pre-Californication but One Hot Minute is standout for me, I think because I've always really liked Jane's Addiction and Dave Navarro adds a bit of that to the Chilis' sound

Interesting with those pickups, do they make it sound like an NS-2 then?
