What can you put through an FRFR cab then? Pre amp or modelling type device?
Can you use an actual amp head output?

    A valve equipped di pedal?

    All of the above.

I've been using wide bandwidth, high fidelity type cabs for decades simply because I don't want a baked in tone from an amp/cab but the flexibility to create it, and vary it according to my needs. Next year I might be getting back together with the girls to gig again and I might be using bass, electric and acoustic guitar and baritone, depending on what we actually play musically. Add a clean amp, a 'FRFR' cab and a modeller like a Stomp and I can get all the bandwidth and clean SPL I need for any type of music in the one rig.

I design and build my own rigs, but the best I've heard in a single box is the Yamaha DXR15.2.

How a pickup is wound affects what it’ll sound like, as does what size/shape it is.

Most manufacturers have different methods & materials.
Then you have positioning. Both where they are between neck & bridge as well as distance from the strings.

And NONE of that relates to what I actually posted, which was around the manufacture of a specific design. I know how pickups are wound, as well as how to design them.

I don't play metal but that is my problem with the licensed parts, to me I could never get any life out of them, they aren't like the genuine barts or the Nords in that regard.

Then they're not the same designs. Pickups are incredibly simple items. Once you have the design down, it makes no difference where and who makes the actual pickups.

Or, people are making decisions with their eyes, and it's not like that's ever happened in human history.

Isn't the point of a custom shop that you get something made to your spec and pay accordingly? How is a master-screwer-together-of-parts selecting a body and neck from a pile of bodies and necks 10 grand's worth of different to what happens in the Mexico factory?

Having tried a few FCS and GCS instruments, I wonder. I have a 150 quid, new, delivered, Tele guitar that I'd have over all of them.

if it wasn't for Leo we probably wouldn't have the world of basses as we know it today

This annoys me. I'm sure someone else would have come up with what is a very basic concept in the same period. He was just the first to mass produce and market well an acceptable product, and most of it wasn't really his in general concept. It's not like he split the atom in his garage.

    That said, in terms of playability and tone, they’re stunning. {snippage}

For all my moaning, the sbss Alembic is probably my favourite in terms of aesthetics and tone.

Agree mainly on both points, but I prefer the LS Series basses for the most part as I prefer 5s and 6s.

Probably a good idea and I've thought of this too - I suspect that it improves both balance and reach.

Not on mine, and I tried moving the strap pins to different locations. My small bodied Series had by far the worst ergonomics of an bass I've ever played.

Had this old Roadstar II and it was a great sounding P-bass; didn't really appreciate the P-sound when I had it so I sold it :(

Messy pic but it's all I have at the moment.

I have one of those, good bass. As mentioned in another thread, I'm keeping it as my token trad 4 banger.

It`s always amazed me that Ibanez don`t re do some of the older models

Because a lot of them were clones or near clones and the market is flooded with them. My Blazer was a superb bass for the time (bought new in 82) but there is little to differentiate it from a lot of others so offers no benefit to the SR/BTB/EHBs in the marketplace.

    Much better than modern Ibanez.

Nope. I've owned quite a number of both at the same time and the older units are different, but in no way better.

I thought I'd share my personal modern instrument choices at this point( I mainly play 5's) - what are yours.

    I'm actually trying to get down to the minimum number of instruments, but likely won't. I think, for basses, my minimum would be;

    BTB846v with Aguilar DCs

    SR806 with SR256 as backup

    SRC6

One of my 5s, but not sure which I'll keep, and,

Ibanez RB620 on the odd chance I actually need a trad looking 4.

I really can't think of anything I've done or likely to do in the future that that list wouldn't cover, especially with modern flexible EQ and FX.

That leaves maybe 30 to sell.

I should try to build my own headless, slim bodied bass

I have the wood for this in my carport loft, for at least 4.

If you're looking for an XT2 style bass, I have 2 I'm thinking about moving on, both 4s, as I seldom use 4s any more. I'm on the East Coast not far from BrisVegas.

PS: There's no U in Steinberger.

  12. XT2s and XT25s are available LH new from Thomann. Don't forget the prices they list incl 19% VAT which you don't need to pay. Shipping is about $A200. New or used LH units are very rare.

Make a strap pin extender, a 1/2 hr $10 job to make it hang correctly. The pickups are OK, but guitar HBs fit and many sound excellent like the Wilde L90 and L500 work well in this application. Several builders on TB have used them. 7 string guitar HBs fit the 25s. Tone is personal and I've used the woodbergers live, not perfect, but good enough.

They are 98cm long unbagged and are less bulky than a trombone case and other bag for a neck off bass will be. I've travelled with my XL2 and woodbergers a lot. Just beware that shotgun bags, which are cheap and fit perfectly and are well padded can bring some looks in airports, but my guitarist has travelled with my Spirit guitar a lot internationally with no issues in the factory bag.

If you intend to use a conventional bass neck off, you'd probably be best to add inserts into the neck to facilitate regular on/off cycles similar to Klos with their CF acoustic guitars to save stripping out the neck.

Streamlines and Synapses are expensive now, especially the former, so an XT2 will be much cheaper.
