It's very much a step by step process, and once you understand the purpose of each step, you don't need much other than guidelines and guide measurements. And apologies if that sounds patronising.

Are you starting from an instrument with possible issues with fret heights, or is this a bass which just needs truss rod, bridge height, and intonation set up?

I don’t have any particular issues apart from the humidity/weather changing things. I think with the advice given here I’m getting to grips with it. Thanks everybody.

I think I may have played this bass when picking up one of my ACGs from Alan. There was also a lovely green Graft Plus 5 string there that day as well. Fantastic looking Graft you have -  I think this colour is called Purgatory iirc

Yeah, it’s a cracking bass. Alan is a great builder. You’re right about the purgatory finish. 👍

  3. I recently got a plate made for my Jazz bass by tiny tone. They can copy an existing plate if you send it to them or they may have a template of your Warwick bass. The plates are handmade and a great fit. Their details are:

  4. I’ve just come across this thread and so am happy to add my 2013 Graft. It’s a marvellous bass and has prompted me to get another bass from Alan. I’m expecting a new Graft 4 J type to be delivered this coming week. I’ll post pics when it’s here.IMG_4464.thumb.jpeg.4ff310370bbd807083aa0b11022e43c3.jpegIMG_4465.thumb.jpeg.b94d0160bf940922ae6b6a969540e19c.jpeg

  5. It is a shame that the Aberdeen store has closed as the only other guitar store only stocks a limited number of used instruments although they do have a very good repair and set up service.

I would also have to say that Kenny’s in Aberdeen had a very poor selection of basses. They more or less catered for those who play six strings. There were several times the store just didn’t have what I was looking for, so it’s not a great surprise I’m afraid.

That’s cool, always nice to know a bit about the journey 👍

The acoustic tone is stunning, I often play it unplugged on the couch.

It’s not looking like I’ll master fretless playing anytime soon, so this bass fits nicely in the fun to own category as it just seems way too good to pass on.

I bought the bass from Vintage & Rare. They advertised it as a ‘94. When I got the info on the bass from Musicman it stated that it began life as a fretted bass. Obviously someone had swapped the neck. I contacted V&R and they offered to take the bass back. I said I loved the bass just as it was and I was just letting them know what I had found out. They very graciously gave me a healthy amount of refund. I was a happy camper!

A couple of Rays, modded one from 1995, and the fretless is a 1994 & 1997 hybrid.

I used to own the Fretless Ray. It was a nice bass.

  8. My son and I have matching basses in that they are both butterscotch and both maple necks and also from the same era. His is the Jazz and mine is the Precision. Anyone else have family related basses or even twins!

  9. I am delighted to hear this news. I just hope the re-launched product is going to be as good as the U.K. case. I think I can remember Hiscox saying that they weren’t going to have cases built outwith the U.K. as they wouldn’t compromise on quality. I’m assuming they are happy with the new product as being on a par with the original cases.
