It's a big, solid timber frame, Gib (Plasterboard) side and heavy timber ply inners.

The doors are big heavy suckers - white oak with steel trusses inside.

Ampeg PF series are great, currently running a pf800 head and pf15he fliptop cab

The old SVT III (non pro) came with the option of being slid into a combo (think it was an isobaric style 2x12) - maybe SVR or something like that...

Ashdown MiBass also had a mount option in 1x10 and 1x12 cab combos. Had the 10 and it was great.

Ibanez Promethean - played one of those a couple of times. Sounded brilliant.

Mesa Scout/Walkabout (had the 15 radiator cab for a couple of years. Awesome piece of kit!!!)

Almost finished the 'guitardrobe' in my music room...

Just needs sanded and painted. Just missing my Dano in its case and Pedaltrain Jnr bag (in my boot) but everything fits like a glove

Scored a bargain today.

Picked up this wee beauty from the old Fakebook marketplace 

equivalent of £200. Only a couple of little dings. Pretty tidy.  Sounds fantastic.

I think I might upgrade the pots so they are a little bit more responsive but it's a stunning instrument.

woukd any of you fine fellows be able to provide the measurements of one of these beauties? am looking at some options and cases etc.

what is the total length? and width of each bout of the body?

I've got one. I adore it! Modded the living daylights out of it but it was fantastic all stock too.

Added a slight contour to the slab, refin in trans white, shielded the crap out of the cavity so no more hum.

Have flipped between the standard pickup and a Lindy Fralin from time to time. Both are excellent though the Fralin has a touch more growl in the top and mid.

With fresh roundwound strings you get a reel 'grindy' sound, similar to Mike Dirnt from Green Day. With flats it's as old-school as you can imagine.

I really wanted to get a Bassman TV Combo to use with it for retro charm but no luck finding one. But it sounds incredible through an Ampeg B100R 'blue rocket' combo! Motown for days. haha

A number of factors at play here.

Type of EUB, body size, materials, pickups and electronics, strings, action etc.

I have a Baby clone and it sounds bloody good and close to the real thing (a decent DB sound).  Have had many a compliment on this very thing.

Initially I had been using weedwhackers on it for a while and it sounded more dark and gutsy and closer to a DB than when it had steels on it. I was playing mostly pizz. I then replaced the E & A with hybrid whackers with a steel core and this gave it a bit more sustain and balance. I also added a second 'clicky' pickup to the back of the fingerboard for slap playing. I blend the two signals together.

I have since added Pirastro Slaps and that has made it seem even more realistic again in terms of achieving a good acoustic upright sound.  

I have also found using an Aphex Big Bottom Bass Xciter has made my EUB sound more 'articulate' all round, particularly giving it a bigger, and generally 'rounder' sound. The trick with using this pedal is that less is more. (I am keen to get my hands on their Acoustic Xciter pedal too, as I am given to believe they can improve upright tone quite substantially.) I run that to a VT deluxe where I have programmed 3 of the channels specifically for the EUB

My EUB does sound pretty close to a full upright as-is, but all of these extra little additions definitely help give it that last nudge towards fully authentic.

I have live recordings from each of the different periods between mods/additions and the differences are noticeable each time.

I run four of them, 2 on my big rig board and 2 on my doubling board (I mount the receivers underneath, connected to power Voodoo labs psu and run them to an ABY switch)

Never had any dropouts or anything. Once of them has a dicky battery door so I just use a rubber band to hold it in place.

They all are in the Neotech strap pouches designed for them and the one with the dodgy battery latch and rubber band go on my upright's tailpiece so no worries about it moving about or anything - so the metal belt clips aren't a concern for me (they are flimsy).

I run mine with Eneloop rechargeable batteries (the black ones) and never had a moments grief. I have run them continuously to test capacity and have got just over 7.5 hrs from the black ones and 5.5 from the white ones.

To be fair, the big rig only comes out about 2 or 3 times a year at best these days, (mostly using one of the SVT rigs for anything decent, the PF rig for smaller stuff.)  usually open air stuff, festivals and things like that.

Last one was in a circus big top which was cool.

Yup, i'm not exactly an Olympic weight-lifting champ either, so getting them in and out of the truck has its moments! worse when all three parts are in their road cases haha.

Still though, feel like a champ when loading in at a big outdoor gig/festival haha

I use mine with two VBC412s and its usually an old precision i put through it. Some lovely old school tones indeed.

How versatile is the VBA? 

They are very powerful and 'big' sounding. And yes, second-hand they can be got for very good money. It's a shame they were a tad obscure back in the day as I reckon they have to be one of the best bass amps ever made, at least in terms of sheer power.

But in terms of dialing in different tones, they aren't the greatest. They sound like a big old valve amp. Different to an SVT sound but still very useable. Just depends on what you're after. But if colouring is what you need, just chuck a good pre like a VT Deluxe in front of it (i quite often do that)

I adore my Ampeg 6x10. I also prefer it over my Ampeg 8x10. Sounds 'grittier' and has more than enough power handling.

I usually run my 4 PRO through it mono bridged and it's a real trouser-flapper.

Can be picked up second hand pretty cheap these days

I use a custom built AB-Y switch (about 20 quid)

I run two line 6 g30 wireless units into it  A - my upright/ B - my bass gat, these then run to TC tuner, DOD compressor and then my preamp - a Tech 21 VT Bass Deluxe with 3 channels saved for various Upright sounds and 3 for my bass gat. Two taps and I've swapped instruments and EQs between songs.

I also use an EHX silencer in the loop to kill pickup hum. 

All fits on a Pedaltrain junior. Lovely jubbly

A boss LS 2 would also be a good option

Anyway, it is a flawless beast of a bass. looks and feels stunning  Beautiful finishing and just feels a class above the previous incarnations. 

This thing is a tone  monster.

The pickups growl like nothing else. Would love to AB with my Gibson Studio IV.

Anyway, I thought it would be another 'maybe'. But it's now number one on the hit list. Now, Black or White....

No problem mate. Spent most of yesterday giving the 800 a real workout. flipped between Precisions and Jazz then Stingray and Thunderbird. Took it to rehearsal with my Ampeg Baby bass and it sang. Waaaay more heft and clarity than the 350. The drummer loved it.

I just flipped (see what I did there) my 350 in favour of the 800.

I am also running a single cab, though mine is the 15he. Have never tried the 210 but would love one as all my other Ampegs are 10's.

I loved the the simplicity of the 350 but found it was slightly lacking in headroom. So I really had to crank it but without clipping it out. So had to use PA support at gigs.

Were you cranking yours a fair bit?  All the lights on and no sound is protection mode I think, so it sounds as though it was over-driven quite a bit.

The cabs are rated at 400w I believe and the the 350 only put out around 250 with a single cab if memory serves.

The 500 would be around 350w with one cab I think, so you'd be fine. But if you can, get the 800. the extra headroom is worth it alone.

I did consider the 500 too, but for the same money as a new one (wouldn't buy a second hand one down here cause not sure if it would be one of the early ones that were prone to faults or not).

but yeah the eq section is wicked. pretty much just set it flat. haha

Santa brought me an upgrade for my pf rig.

Had the 350 for the last 12 months. I loved the sound through the 15 fliptop cab, especially playing with uprights bit found I really had to crank it to get the volume I wanted.

So considered the 800 for a bit before I spotted one pop up for sale second hand at a good price.

Having sold my 350 two days earlier, I was keen!

Arrived Xmas eve so in the spirit of things I did the unthinkable and left it alone till Christmas morning.

Needless to say I was up early attaching it to the cab lid!

Sound: EXACTLY what I was after! Tons more headroom, and the expanded eq section certainly helps. It sounds a touch more SVT than b15 whereas I found the 350 to have a more vintagey tone. But it still has 'That' sound.

Love it!!!!

I love my VBA400!!! more power than I have sticks to shake at it 

Also my SVT is pretty badass.

Also have this cool little Kiwi copy of a Twin (only 10 of them made) Sounds lovely with a P bass plugged in. Love the built in Trem too!!!
