    I normally use a samson wireless but I have used a lead. My other basses dont have the same problem. I have tried to eliminate all the variables so active and passive basses, different amps, and the only constant is the bass

    I need to get an hour or so to strip it right back and do some substitutions

    I dont remember it being a problem with the original pick up but i swapped the old one out almost as soon as I got it.

    I originally used a raven labs pbr preamp but it didnt soung great so i took it out again

    I did wonder about magnet strength, and how close it was to the strings, which is why I checked the fender specs

    I must admit, i didnt think of the strings, which are rotos, I bought a few sets at a music show a while back. I must admit, I put a set on a lakland jerry scheff and was distinctly underwhelmed and put on some jazz flats instead.

    I dont think its earthing or sheilding as the bass is pretty quiet when not being played, although I have got some copper sheilding tape from a project so i might put that in anyway.

    I think im going to strip it down, and maybe swap the pickups out of the other one, keeping the same distance from the strings.

    I have always had a precision and a few months ago, i bought a second one, a cij 62 re issue, which is standard, except i replaced the pick up with a usa vintage style one

    There appears to be a sort of unpleasant overtone? to the notes, the primary note is there, but there is an underlying sound to the note. It sounds like a cross between a hiss and fret buzz

    Its not the amp because it happens on other amps, and doesnt happen on the same amp with different guitars.
    its not overloading the preamp
    Its not fret noise, and it happens on open and fretted notes
    the pick up is not too close to the strings according to the fender spec. If anything it could be closer
    I cant see anything wrong with the wiring
    The logical next step is to swap out the pick up/pots and caps but i will have to do that from my other bass which is a bit of a fag.
    Before I do thaty, anyone got any bright ideas?

    i was one of the early subscribers but cancelled my subscription a few years ago. I occasionally pick up a copy from Smiths or wherever, but find theres not enough meat there.

    The other thing i find difficult is the use of say white ink on a black or coloured background. I just picked up an old rickenbacker special copy, and some of the white on colour print is easily readable, and some is not so easy. I dont need glasses for reading but I really struggle to read your copy. I dont know if it varies through the print run.

    I often like to read in the bath, bog, bed, whatever, sometimes inless than ideal lighting conditions. If I cant read the print easily, it takes away all the interest

  5. weve done it for years.

    we started off using a midi file player with the instruments through the pa and a click plus someinstruments through headphones to the drummer.

    Now i use a 4 track mini disc player with a stereo out to the pa and a third channell as the click going to a mini mixer to the drummers headphones. He can take a feed from the pa for his vocals as well if he wants to. We dont hear the click, only the drummer does, and then we are guided by him, but it only works if you have a pre rehearsed song arrangement.

    Once you get used to it its fairly easy, but like all things you have got to work at it to get the best results. I have toyed with the idea of using an i pod or mp3 player but someones has got to fumble with the knobs and buttons, which isnt always convenient with a bass round your neck where as i can control the start and next track from footswitches. The drawback is its only 37 mins per disc for 4 track recording.

    I looked at the korg d888 which gived you 4 tracks of simultaneous playback from its internal hard disc but you cant footswitch contro;; it.

    I can add a recomendation for them as well. Quick service, and I had the stitching come undone on my acoustic 406 cab cover, and they redid it without a murmur.

    While it is OK occasinally it is really lazy and unprofessional. You work hard to write/learn a song and you cant be arsed to work out a proper ending. You also loose the effect of a really great song because the audience have probably finished clapping by the time everyone has finshed w..... away.

    I dont know about broad street, but a friend and i used to drive up from portsmouth, about 200 odd miles each way just to wander around Musical Exchanges. It used to have a great atmosphere and some good stuff. I used to like the little tunnels each was filled with different manufacturers amps. There was also some really interesting old stuff, not just 'vintage' but just old HH, carlsboro, old fender and ampeg.

    I went in not long after it became sound control but it was just like any other big box store.

  9. I use an ashdown mini 4x8 and mini 1x15 with my wt 400 because i wanted a smaller rig.

    I originally had an eden 2x10 xt and a 1 x15t and i dont think they were particularly special, but I have used an eden 2 x10 xlt and that is a really great cabinet. It is very efficient and has a good response even with a 5.

    If I could carry one, I think these days i would be inclined to go for an eden 4x10xlt and not bother with a 15

  13. unless the item is fairly low value, and the seller uses normal post, you will get clobbered for customs and vat.
    If it goes through usps, ups, fedex etc, they will pay the import duty, bill you, and add a handling charge.
    You will pay roughly 22% of the cost and on the shipping cost. It doesnt make much difference if its second hand, you pay vat regardless, and there is a marginal difference in the customs duty.
    You can try to get the seller to under declare, but the customs are not stupid, and you run the risk of loosing the bass. You will also be out because the shipping insurance will only cover the declared value.
    Having said that i have bought probably 15 basses from the us, saved money on all of them, and never had a problem.
    USPS is by far the cheapest shipping method, and you can reduce the cost even more if the neck is taken off to make a smaller parcel

    I work in mail order and most e commerce systems dont complete the transaction until either the goods are despatched, or untill a transaction complete entry is made manually

    It would be unusual to take the money before processing the order.

    Ive had my us jo for about 4 years, theres no way i would have splashed out that sort of money for a passive bass without being fairly sure i liked it.
    The skyline was the test bed, and only the weight put me off.
    I think the skylines are much better today than they were weight wise. I have a shoreline gold scheff and thats not too bad. I think the skylines are great basses or the money.

    I had a candy apple red skyline jo and it was really heavy, i sold it on, just wondered if it was the same beast, very nice tho.

  18. Ive been watching this thread with interest to see what the response was, as I was the seller to wigfinder, and the other instruments sold on ebay.

    The weight does vary between instruments, and the one WFG bought was the heaviest I have seen, they weigh in between 9-11 1/2 pounds on my kitchen scales, and guess who has the heaviest one.

    I dont think it is the wood necessarily that gives it the punch, as the alder one is equally as punchy as the mahogany ones. I think they have just got plenty of windings on the pickup. I intended to replace my pickup with a Seymour Duncan, but Im not going to bother as its more than adequate as it is

    The bridges are basic but adequate, tuners the same.

    The jazz bass is nice, with the mahogany top no scratch plate and rear mounted controls. I bought a 335 copy, and that was extremely good.

    I beleive they are made in east europe, possibly eastern germany, but Im not certain. The quality for the money is outstanding.

    Biggest problem as you all seem to have found is communication from Bach

  19. For a small package, if you make sure your shipper uses USPS air parcel post and does not insure and track it, it will generally come through the post office and not parcel force. If there is a tracking sevice, you will always get to pay the clearance charges and customs duty.
    Royal Mail [post office] is not the same as parcel force. and generally it seems that they dont bother with relatively low value parcels.
    I have avoided duty on virtually every hardware package sent that way in the past
