  1. The recessed Jack socket on my longtime Yamaha TRB has been problematic over the years. I took it to Ged Green who has been asked to fix quite a few - he suggested it’s a bit of a design flaw. Ged fitted a “surface mounted” plate and socket which has been trouble free ever since. (Photo below - the orange bass).

I also own a Nathan East model which one is fab in every way except the same problem. Lead/socket is always under some kind of bad tension due to the angle of the recessed jack. Unlike the TRB it will be impossible to fit a surface mounted socket. (Photo attached of the white bass)

Has anyone managed to overcome this, or is it a case of replacing socket every few years…?

  2. Sounds simple but lots of deep breaths! (For some reason I hold my breath on difficult bits!)

Also keeping your entire body loose when playing.  Take your hands off your instrument between numbers to entirely release tension and shake. I stand/dance for this reason.

  3. Need a new extension reel and a couple of 4-ways. Obvs decent quality to avoid unnecessary earth buzz and black for stage. Thought it should be the easiest thing ever, but bought a couple off Amazon that have been rubbish - cheap as you like. In frustration I went to B&Q today, but every extension cable was bright yellow/orange/green. (Which I understand for health and safety, but not gigging!). Any suggestions?

  4. Will try to take better photos to show fingerboard radius.

Unrelated, someone by DM has asked about string spacing. Overwater have told me:

it is a variation of a Scott Devine signature in that it has the slightly smaller body, 16.5mm string spacing and individual bridge pieces of the SDJ but with a 34” scale length as opposed to the 33” that comes as standard.

This is a touch narrower than my other 5-string basses, but coupled with a "Fender Jazz-like" slim neck makes the bass very easy to play.....

  5. NOW SOLD!

For Sale - this Fabulous Overwater Custom J5 - complete with Certificate of Authenticity and Overwater Case.

I purchased a few years ago because I wanted a really high quality "Jazz" - and this doesn't disappoint. I'm normally a "punchy-active-kind-of-a-guy", but fell in love with this bass sound which is classic and "unaggressive" (is that a sound??) but also surprisingly versatile. It has certainly fitted into all the musical situations I have played. The full and warm sound just always sits "nicely" in the mix.  Previous owner had flats on it which actually sounded great although not for me. I've still got them if the buyer wants them. Currently strung with D'Addario round wounds.

It's beautifully constructed with top notch hardware including Hipshot Ultra-Light tuners. And the Overwater "Noiseless J" pickups coupled with their own 'Flat Response' Buffer Pre-amp and Passive EQ are really lovely.

Swamp Ash body and Maple neck (I think). Lots of spec detail on the OW website. (Plus prices - a new one would set you back £3.5k).

I'm told it was born with a natural satin finish in December 2015, but swiftly went back to OW for the high gloss white finish that looks awesome.

Condition is excellent. Only one significant blemish in the white paintwork which I have tried to photograph. A "dirty" mark rather than a proper ding/scratch. You need to look close to see it.

Reason for sale is quite simply that GAS has really got a grip of me. I now own more basses than I can ever hope to play. And today, I scratched a lifetime itch and bought a Ken Smith from Bass Direct (that I can neither afford, nor justify!). Something has to go, and funds need raising.

Holler with any questions - and you're welcome to try if ever in Stockport/Wilmslow area. Can post in that hard case, or meet part-way too if this helps a buyer.

    Cheers

  6. Welcome Bob!

In my (limited) experience, even a "rubbish" bass can be greatly enhanced by a set of new strings and a decent set-up. As you've decided you're a pizz player, definitely worth investing in pizz-specific set. (As has been said, you can sell them on again if you change your mind.)

And a decent set-up may not cost as much as you suspect. Every time I did this, I've been amazed how much my bass has been improved by someone that understands the dark art of sound post positioning, fingerboard radius, bridge fitting etc...

Not only will both of the above make the instrument sound better, but it will be easier and more rewarding to play than "fighting" a knackered old instrument. Which is demoralising for everyone - especially as you're just starting out.

One other point - you may be thinking about pickups if you're keen to get gigging on it. For me, paying up for a really good quality pickup was worthwhile (another good 2nd hand market if you change your mind). My mediocre bass and technique were flattered by a decent pickup - my first bass in particular lacked decent low end, but amplified (with a bit of EQ tweaking) sorted that.

    Good luck!

  7. My 4X10 has done a few miles. The paint on the grill had been scratched a bit and was a bit flaky showing rusty brown metal underneath.

I'm absolutely not qualified to dish out DIY advice, but it turns out it is the easiest job in the world to take off the grill, tape over the badge, rub with fine wire wool and spray on a couple of coats of black metal spray paint from Screwfix. Grill has come up good as new.

Used the cab on a gig last night and the Drummer commented how “good it sounded - looks like an expensive bit of kit”!
