I don't get on with Basses that are too heavy, or with tight string spacing. And phallic looking horns are a turn off!

Try enlarging the pickguard hole a little, I find nail files are good for this. Of course it could be the foam has perished a bit. Best way to check is to for the old pg again and see if the fault remains.
enlarged the pickup hole and still having the same issue, problem only happens when i screw the pickguard down and when i do so the pickguard between the top of the neck pickup and bottom of the neck bulges upwards. ive attached a picture but its quite hard to see.
i think maybe the different pickguard has the pickup route minutely closer to the neck than the original and maybe the bottom of the pickup plate is getting caught on the edge of the pickup route. might try taking a hacksaw to it and cutting off a little bit of the bottom plate when i next go to visit my parents but i think for now i might put the original white pickguard back on.- 1

hi, so i changed the pickguard on my fernandes rb80 rickenbacker copy and i just cant seem to get the neck pickup to sit flat. it was fine with the old pickguard. the pickup is a little tight in the hole in the pickguard but not massively could it be that or would it be crappy springs and lack of foam?

Six weeks on from the above and I'm still searching. There were a couple of brief moments of excitement during Nov, firstly when a used black/black '76 with road wear turned up on Reverb. But it was a manufactured a couple of weeks before mine according to the serial. Also, The Bass Gallery in London had listed a used Jetglo '76 with a non-original bridge pickup. TBG are located just a couple of miles from my old apartment, so I was immediately intrigued. A quick trip up there confirmed it wasn't the one, unfortunately.
So, I’m still no closer to finding the guitar and the waiting game goes on. In the meantime, here’s a pic of my manservant giving it a quick tune up back in 1992.sorry to hear its still not showed up, hopefully you hear something soon! same colours as the fernandes copy i play with the black pickguard / white truss rod cover, although was the pickguard painted black looks like its worn through to white in the picture or is that a sticker?

id probably recommend sticking with 45-105 or 45-100 as a start. remember if you do get a set of flats and dont like them you can always list them for sale here!

just 1 (maybe overly large) amp, an old sound city b120 that i got as a spares and repairs sale and fixed up. put it through a laney guitar cab hopefully the speakers dont blow...

Was it the square or angled cab? I had the square cab and it sounded immense.
it was square, i just dont have the space to store it... ill probably have to get rid of this laney cab when i move next year

Nice! I had a Park valve bass head and Sound City 4x12 bass cab back in the 80s along with a 62 re-issue Precision in identical colours. Sounded amazing.
nice! i saw a really batter sound city 4x12 come up locally for £75 and had to fight off the urge to get it!

The Ashdown is… meh… and certainly not in the same tonal category as the Sub Blaster. The closest comparison, to my ears, is the Aguilar Octomizer, thanks to the built in low pass filter that lets you tune it just right.
IMO, I think the Aguilar is far far far superior to the Sub Blaster in basically every way, while still letting you nail that sound if you want it (and it’s still not my favourite octave pedal!).
Oh, it’s also going to be waaaaaaaay cheaper than finding an Ampeg! Win.
sweet thannks, ill have a look at it. plus that aguilar is alot less big than those ampeg ones.

hi, i had a search through pages and couldnt find anything asking this question so apologies if theres already a post but, im looking for a copy of the ampeg sub blaster since they come up for sale so rarely, is the ashdown sub harmonic generator a similar type of octave pedal? as well does anyone have any experience with it in general?
thanks, leo

those are rotosound 77s

the thin horns remind me a bit of the kramer dmz5000

started with rotos the normal rs66ld set got a set of them with my first bass, when the silk started fraying i decided id stay away from the strings with silk
moved on to the rotobass set in 50-110 gauge when i started down tuning, later tried some rotosound 77s but decided i didnt like how flatwounds felt.
now im just using daddario xls (55-110) as i tune to c# or c and they seem to be the minimum tension i can get away with, i quite like the loose feel but normal medium gauge flops around a little too obnoxiously

no silks would be rotosound rotobass

If you're going down that road you need to get routine that involves always having one or the other connected to the amp.
Failure means you turn on and no sound comes out. If you keep playing trying to figure it out you will be frying your precious tube amp.
oh didnt know that, ill have to keep that in mind. it is my only amp at the moment but it isnt particularly precious, just something i found really cheap on facebook, does sound pretty good though to be fair

It might work on a modeler.
Since a modeler will only replicate the EQ of the speakers not the actual excursion of them.
And your small 10W combo amp might had been different too.
But as someone who actually tried to play bass, and not very loud even, and not even a very bassy bass, for a recoding, through the Roland JC120 Jazz Chorus amp I once owned, I wouldn't recommend it.
The speakers didn't like it that's for sure the way they behaved and violently moved about, and sounded pretty donkey too.
To OP:
As someone else has already pointed out I would hook up the actual amp part of your combo to an external cab made with bass being played through it in mind instead, that is unless you want to build the amp into a completely new combo cabinet with a design and dimensions fitting an actual bass speaker.
Guitar amps can make great bass amps, guitar cabs and guitar speakers not so much.
yep think ill just keep a look out on facebook, ive seen some decent looking cabs come up for the £60, £70 mark, so theres definately something i could do

yeah i know its just i really like using channel 2 for a distortion sound its better than any pedals i have!
microphone for making demos at home
in Recording
Posted
hi, id like to start trying to record rough versions of songs ive written, at home. id really like to start a band, i tried asking in my unis music group but nothing came of it so I was thinking if i had some basic recordings of a few songs would be good to add onto an advert.
so i was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a microphone would be a decent all rounder for guitar bass and vocals, it would mostly be doom metal so bass and guitar with alot of distortion and id like to try and learn how to sing distorted.
ideally something affordable that id be able to get used, hopefully £100 or less that would do an ok job at everything, it doesnt have to sound perfect just ok for demo ey type things. i was thinking about a shure 58, but not sure if it would be better to go for something different thats more instrument focused, ive heard good things about audio technica stuff too.
also any recommendations for an affordable interface and whatever other things id need to start recording would be appreciated as well as any advice on programming drums.
thanks in advance, leo : )
