they'll be more knowledgeable people than me along soon, but wattage is not a good way to know how loud something will go, I did used a Trace Elf 1 x 8 combo once, and that wasn't loud enough, but others have said the Elf's are with the right cab
oh no im not worried about volume, more breaking other peoples speakers with an amp that shouldnt go with the cabinet

heyo, just wondering if anyone could help with working out sortof how much wattage would be good to go for, im looking for a lighter smaller amp that i can walk to rehearsals with, ive got an old sound city head which is awesome but the thing weighs like 50kg so obviously not particularly portable.
generally im playing through cabinets that arent mine, usually tend to be 4x10s, which seem to be around the 650 watt 8 ohm range.
ive seen a peavey minimega used that i might make an offer on, but with 1000w is that too much, i know thats the ohmage and wattage works out different and honestly it confuses me alot, but i just want to know before i send an offer would i find myself not being able to use it with alot of cabinets because its too many watts?
hopefully ive worded all that in a way that makes sense, any help will be appreciated!
cheers, leo -

depends on your play style and the type of music! i think slower doomy stuff you can get away with lower tension and it being floppy. my band plays in c and i just use power slinkies (55 to 110), the tensions low i think thats about the minimum you need for it to not go out of tune when you pick.
if its more precise? music if you get what i mean, faster stuff i think you need the tension. probably best way to go would be a light 5 string set and dont use the g string

I've only played one once in a. Festival stage and it was pretty good through an 810. Spades of power and presence.
Everyone's posts above are bang on.....throw in the cost of a revalve and it's not cheap...
That said I still play through a matamp gt200. Not the most practical, heavy, way too loud at times, but I love playing it.
I had a Laney nexus (400w all valve) for a while. Awesome amp, but played too many gigs where it didn't really get going in the power section.
I bet the soundcity is pretty banging as amps go. If you're looking lighter I think the handbox might be at 100ish watts?..... Ashdown ctm100 is pretty light by valve standards.... Kinda depends on your rehearsal volume, cabs and tuning etc. ✌️
The sound city seems to be doing pretty good for sure! I'm a little paranoid it'll go bang one day but we shall see.
Honestly I think I've overestimated the wattage I'd need, I saw eyehategod in Bournemouth this Tuesday gone and Gary had a 900 watt dark glass head and he had the volume less than half... Mega loud!

Personally I wouldn't go valve. I managed to get some disgusting sound with an Ashdown ABM600 and a Two Notes Le Bass valve preamp pedal with the dirt wound up.
Honestly I was looking for something smaller and lighter than the sound city I have, but it cropped up on Facebook and it distracted me...

I'm not sure that you've thought this through. 400w of valve amp is going to want double that in speaker cabs, if you want to turn it up at all. It's not at all like 400w of solid-state, and the cabs that would be suitable weigh as much, or more, than the amp itself, plus the sheer volume (in cubic metres...) that they take up, whether you're playing or not. It's really not feasible for general pub gigs, or any venue, really, except stadiums. A good bragging point, of course, and a great amp when used at its full potential; when are you next playing the Hollywood Bowl, though..? Does it go Loud..? Yes, in spades, with the set of cabs to match that power, but you'll have to factor in the cost of the Transit van, sturdy sack truck and a couple of burly roadies for the event when next out. You asked; you are now forewarned.
Thanks for the wisdom, I'm glad I asked!
Honestly i didn't know about the wattage on cabinets, I just assumed you want at minimum the wattage of the amp for the cabinet
considering Id be using it mostly with rehearsal room cabinets that's definitely something that could have been a problem.

thanks all, ill hold off on going for anything soon, id really like to try keep spending under 250 or so, sounds like the laney digbeth or an ashdown abm600 are a decent bet to go for and i think ive seen those ashdowns pretty reasonably priced before so ill keep an eye out.
definetely see how my sound city goes over the weekend through the 4x10 at the rehearsal space and maybe ill just keep running that, my only fear is it crapping out but i guess cross that bridge when i come to itI may throw my wanting something lighter away... I've been offered a pretty fair price on a marshall vba400, do you guys think that'd be a good doom amp?
On paper I reckon it should be great, but you don't really see many people in the scene using one

I'm surprised to hear that you don't find this head to be 'loud'. In good state, they are often used to explode ex-nazi coastline bunkers with sonic power. It won't work well with small 1x10 cabs, but given a 4x12 stack, or 2x15, it'll remove all the glass from your house, and the neighbours. What cab are you using..?
All this depends, of course, of it being in its original (or correctly upgraded...) specification, original 'Partridge' transformers, and six matched output valves. In full swing, it would melt the Orange Super Crush. There's no comparaison with Peavey amps, either. If it's not loud, get it fixed, and stand far enough back when you turn it on afterwards. Yes, they are heavy, though.
aah ive only run it through a 2x12 before, ill try it next practice through a bigger cab! it is vaguely original the weird preamps not been modified to my knowledge and its still got the huge partridge transformers but im not sure about the valves, the guy who helped me fix it bought those but i think they were new...

hey! managed to get myself in a band with some people at uni, does anyone have any cheaper amp recommendations, ideally on the lighter side. ive got an old sound city b120 i found broken and fixed up, but i dont think its really loud enough and its about 25kg to lug around if we can get gigs in the future.
the orange stuff (ob1 500 or terror bass) is interesting but on the expensive side, ive also seen alot of cheaper peavey stuff, seems theres a few peavey tour 700s around anyone have any experience with those?
ill give the sound city a go at practice this weekend see if it competes, guitarist has an orange super crush head that was pretty loud and he only had it halfway up and the warwick head the rehearsal space had was struggling to keep up.thanks!

hi, id like to start trying to record rough versions of songs ive written, at home. id really like to start a band, i tried asking in my unis music group but nothing came of it so I was thinking if i had some basic recordings of a few songs would be good to add onto an advert.
so i was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a microphone would be a decent all rounder for guitar bass and vocals, it would mostly be doom metal so bass and guitar with alot of distortion and id like to try and learn how to sing distorted.
ideally something affordable that id be able to get used, hopefully £100 or less that would do an ok job at everything, it doesnt have to sound perfect just ok for demo ey type things. i was thinking about a shure 58, but not sure if it would be better to go for something different thats more instrument focused, ive heard good things about audio technica stuff too.also any recommendations for an affordable interface and whatever other things id need to start recording would be appreciated as well as any advice on programming drums.
thanks in advance, leo : )

I don't get on with Basses that are too heavy, or with tight string spacing. And phallic looking horns are a turn off!

Try enlarging the pickguard hole a little, I find nail files are good for this. Of course it could be the foam has perished a bit. Best way to check is to for the old pg again and see if the fault remains.
enlarged the pickup hole and still having the same issue, problem only happens when i screw the pickguard down and when i do so the pickguard between the top of the neck pickup and bottom of the neck bulges upwards. ive attached a picture but its quite hard to see.
i think maybe the different pickguard has the pickup route minutely closer to the neck than the original and maybe the bottom of the pickup plate is getting caught on the edge of the pickup route. might try taking a hacksaw to it and cutting off a little bit of the bottom plate when i next go to visit my parents but i think for now i might put the original white pickguard back on.-

hi, so i changed the pickguard on my fernandes rb80 rickenbacker copy and i just cant seem to get the neck pickup to sit flat. it was fine with the old pickguard. the pickup is a little tight in the hole in the pickguard but not massively could it be that or would it be crappy springs and lack of foam?

Six weeks on from the above and I'm still searching. There were a couple of brief moments of excitement during Nov, firstly when a used black/black '76 with road wear turned up on Reverb. But it was a manufactured a couple of weeks before mine according to the serial. Also, The Bass Gallery in London had listed a used Jetglo '76 with a non-original bridge pickup. TBG are located just a couple of miles from my old apartment, so I was immediately intrigued. A quick trip up there confirmed it wasn't the one, unfortunately.
So, I’m still no closer to finding the guitar and the waiting game goes on. In the meantime, here’s a pic of my manservant giving it a quick tune up back in 1992.sorry to hear its still not showed up, hopefully you hear something soon! same colours as the fernandes copy i play with the black pickguard / white truss rod cover, although was the pickguard painted black looks like its worn through to white in the picture or is that a sticker?
help with working out how much wattage i need!

its doomy metal, so it gets semi loud for rehearsals ive found using a little tc electronic 250 watter i had to have it almost on full. my sound city head i never really get past half on the volume and thats only 120w but its valves so different obviously.
im guessing maybe id be ok with the peavey thing if i could get a decent deal on it if im not pushing the volume too high then, but i think i might hold out and wait for a 500w head to come up just so im not worrying about it. thanks for all the help!
