    As has been mentioned on other threads, music theory is a definition of what we do when we play music - understanding what works and what doesn't is what you're after - which music theory helps to explain, but cannot in itself give you.

    Getting a teacher is certainly a good idea, as it allows you ask questions, and (hopefully) things can be explained to you in a way that makes sense.

    An understanding of theory, along with its practical application (something you can begin to use to dissect songs you're currently playing) will give you more options and more places on the neck to play, but don't forget that sometimes breaking "the rules" can sound good too :)

    I stopped playing a couple of years ago because I'd become tired of what I was doing musically - sold off most of my gigging gear (apart from the bass) because there was no point in keeping it around - three months later I was asked to play bass in a very different band and had to buy up a whole new gigging rig :)

    So I'd agree that if there are particular parts of your set up that you would consider essential for any gigging situation, and that you'd make the effort to buy again should a new project come up, then hang on to those and then decide what to do with what ever's left.

    Give it six months and then look at things again.

    unless I'm sorely mistaken (and this may well be possible depending on the age of the combo) it has the head from a 103H (a Little Mark II) instead of the head from a 102P . . . . . a Little Mark II.

    so the "pimping" is having the wrong sticker on the back of the amp.

    The top horn and the lower right section are exactly the same as Model 1, with the top left section hinting at a J Bass shape and the lower horn being modded to give a little more access to the top frets.

    I'm going to stick to making the two bass shapes available for the time being, with a number of Telecaster-shaped guitars for those who prefer such things.

    Basically giving people complete freedom to design anything they wanted just made life too complicated :rolleyes:

    After recent mentions of fanned-fret basses, I've decided I might try it on a bass at some point to see what all the fuss is about :)


    The new body is going to be painted and will probably have the neck from the bass at the top fitted to it - I'm making the new neck for that at the moment.

    . . or if you're trying to work out a song, perhaps.

    I have a band leader/guitarist/singer who has been known to get carried away, so that a song I can play without any difficulty sometimes becomes a roller-coaster ride as it's started way quicker than usual.

    I discovered in Audacity that if you open an mp3 and then Ctrl-a, then select Effect -> Change Tempo you can speed up the song without changing the pitch.

    Which means I can get some practice in at speeds even faster than he can manage :)

    So if you wanted to nail a busy bass line you could slow it down to give you more chance of picking out the right notes.

    How much focus have you had to 'copy' someone?

    I came back to playing bass after a long break (I originally picked one up because I was sick of lugging around/setting up/packing away drums) but never made much effort to copy anyone (or learn much!) when I started out.

    I've rarely fixated on anyone whether it be a drummer or bass player, and as I get to make up my own bass parts I usually sound like me :)

    There are times where I take a step back and modify what I'm playing if I feel it will improve the song, but it never involves a concious effort to mimic anyone else's style.

    I've no plan to add a scratchplate, but I might change the neck for one of a different colour when I get round to making it.

    just finished off a back up bass for myself, might even gig it this weekend :)



    Swamp ash body - maple neck - flamed sycamore fingerboard.

    Bongo pickup (bought from someone on here about four years ago !).

    John East U Retro preamp.

    advice... will this warp my neck?

    there's also a fair chance that if the slots are too narrow the extra thickness of a bigger string will break the nut (especially a plastic one)

    It might be that you've run out of thread on the rod (the wood may have compressed exposing the limit of the threaded bit) if you can get the nut off then a spacer or a washer or two might give you back some ability to tighten again.

    If in doubt, take it to someone who knows what they're doing and get a second opinion.

    Usually I come up with these daft ideas after a glass or two of wine, but I have no excuses these days :)

    I was just about to hang a recent purchase back on the wall and was playing it with the jack socket standing on the table, which gave me an idea . .

    So combining the bass with a cheap (£10) pool cue :



    I came up with this :



    Not sure the height is quite there yet, and I might need some sort of strap to help keep hold of it, but other than that it's just damn silly :rolleyes:
