1.
Hello fellow Bassmen/women

Moving on from a previous post of mine, where i was considering trading in my Aerodyne for a G & L L200, as i was in search for more tone, i have decided to just upgrade the pickups on my Aerodyne instead. I have already upgraded the stock Jazz pickup to a "Hum cancelling" DiMarzio UltraJazz, which hasn't actually cancelled any hum at all, but maybe this is down to additional cavity shielding being needed. I had the UltraJazz professionally installed, so i know that the grounding has been done properly.

Anyways....My question is, what would be, in your opinion, the absolute best p/j pickup set that i could buy to replace my current pickup configuration?

And also, does anyone know where in Surrey/South London i can take my Aerodyne to be fully cavity shielded/Grounded by a professional?

    Thanks,

    Mat
Hi Mat.

It's be kind to wallets week! ('Celebrated 52 times per year.)

With any of the Fenders I've owned over the years, achieving the right balance of neck relief, good string action at the bridge AND nut, intonation, and pickup height (level with the 'guard, and high enough for full-sounding string capture, yet low enough to minimize magnetic string-damping) made ALL the difference between a so-so 'guitar', and a BASS which played like butter & sounded like gold.

The photos which are now missing from the early part of that thread have been archived in post #103 as an MS Word .doc file.

It's only a matter of time before most bass players (and guitarists) learn how to do their own setups because, in the end, only we know how we wish our instruments to feel and perform. :)

  3. In the wake of this heart-wrenching loss of young talent I sincerely hope that record companies will add MANDATORY travel insurance for band members to the list of things which are done to put their acts on tour.

I also hope that labels begin doing a better job of coaching their groups' less experienced members as to practical form when touring abroad.

I'm not laying blame. 'Just saying there are lessons to be learned.

Let's not allow ambivalence and willful ignorance an opportunity to depreciate the memory of these two lads and the rewarding careers they likely would've had.

  4.
Well, the people at PRS electronics in Liverpool were unable to find anything wrong with the cab itself, so I've dropped off the amp for them to check. I got the 700rb II 2nd hand about a year ago and it has been fine so far, so I'll see what they say.

One other thought, could the power source have anything to do with this? The reason I ask is that the electricity in my band's rehearsal room is a bit dodgy (turn a lamp on from one socket and the PA powered from a different socket goes pop, kind of thing) and it's a possibility I haven't considered yet.
Perhaps G-K's dealer in England could recommend alternate repair shops?

Have you tested your cab with a different amp?

Do you have something like one of these in your gig kit as a countermeasure to the inevitability of stage-wiring-by-club-owner's-brother-in-law?

Here in the colonies an equivalent device is considered to be a potential life saver...

  5.
Actually, i could just type the stuff down on here... :)

    Fretless Tips

-Practice in pitch-black/blindfold whatever takes your fancy, as long as you can't see the fretboard

-Practice Scales, use open strings to get an idea of an in-tune scale, then move on to full neck scales once the ear has developed. (.....i was rubbish with scales on fretless )

    -Practice intervals - 8ves, 7ths, 6ths, 5ths, 4ths, 3rds,

-Play it like a fretted bass. i.e - don't go sliding up and down to the notes because it's possible to do so.

-Mess about/experiment with sound envelope by plucking with different intensity and in different positions.

-It might say to play the fretless like a fretted, but mess about by taking full advantage of the lack of frets!

    Reccomended Listening

Japan (Mick Carn on bass) - Oil on Canvas

    Paul Young - no parle

    Joni Mitchell (w/ Jaco pastorius):

    Hejira
    Mingus
Shadows and Light - 'Dry cleaner from Des Moines' <- Stand out track

Just a reminder, it's all stuff recommended by my bass teacher so i'm not to blame if any of it sounds a bit silly

    Hope this helps!!

    James
Addendum: play ON the imaginary frets.

All this equipment was illegally removed from premises in Willesden a couple of years ago. There was a lot more, but these are the main bits.

Reward offered if I can find the druggy bxstard who ripped it off, his mobile number miraculously doesn't work anymore, but he was well known as a brilliant but extremely lazy technician in the amp-repair world until he did a runner with everyones money and equipment, now he is just a c..t who owes me several thousand quid of vintage gear and a big fat apology.

Learning songs can be very rewarding, but how about taking a short break and working some stuff of your own? Maybe invest in an accompaniment app like Band-in-a-box. Key in some chord progressions (it's very easy and very flexible) and set to work on a blank canvas.
8. Update:

"Things are looking great for a LaBella branded strings made just for the Hellcat VI.

I just received this from one of their VPs:

"How are you. Thank you for writing us about the Hellcat project. I will be sending out the final proto-type set we worked on this week. Once we get it on the bass and make sure everything is perfect, we will move forward in production. It is of the utmost importance that we give this set all the attention and detail we can to get the best product. I will keep you informed on the progress.

Once I figure out the lengths, we can make round nickel or stainless. I can also do them in black nylon tape wound."

There you have it. There might be some great string alternatives for the Hellcat VI coming down the pike from LaBella. But, they need to know there's enough interest in them. If you have a minute please email Eric Cocco <[email protected]> and let him know that you'd be interested in buying these if LaBella produces them."

  9.
I sincerely hope this reply is not disrespectful, I just wanted to address the above.

The question is, where do you (we/ the UK government/whoever?) draw the line? Sadly, Tim did not have travel insurance which is designed to pay for exactly this sort of thing. I have read media accounts of people having to remortgage/sell family homes, borrow from friends and relatives or beg the same people for money because a relation or friend has either fallen ill whilst abroad and needed expensive medical care/medical repatriation or has sadly died overseas and the body is to be repatriated. I'm sure that there are many more cases of this sort of thing that simply go unreported, Tim's case, whilst undoubtedly tragic, is far from unique.
Hi Mrs Tinman.

    Indeed.

In the spirit of what lessons can be drawn from this tragic loss of young life, perhaps record labels would do well to consider expanding the scope of their tour planning to include mandatory travel insurance for band members as well as coaching their acts on the aspects of traveling abroad.

To be clear: I'm not attempting to assign any blame.

It's just that in hindsight a tragedy of this nature likely could've been averted and the next one definitely should be.

  10.
The Ealing Gazette are reporting the family need to pay £10k to get Tim home. That's shocking. I wouldn't want to be the tour manager right now.
11.
Hi,
Just seen a nice set up over here.
    Bassman 100 and silverface 4x12
I have a VBA 400 and 4x12 so sorted for valves and power really,
just wanted to know if I take a punt, what would be a fair price for a fully functional setup with no real scuffs or tears?
I saw on another thread someone found one at less than 500quid? Or was I dreaming?
I have no idea about these amps, other than the fact that the stock speakers are apparently awful and will need replacing and that the 100 became the 135 around 79 or so.
Any and all help appreciated lads,
    Cheers,
    Col

    :)
Hi basshead56.

Is that cab the infamous 'cross-fire' 4x12" (each driver mounted on its own angled baffle)?

If so, I had one (along with its Bassman 100 head) a long time ago.

Its speakers appeared to be the same units which were used in the Fender Twin Reverb and the cab was a poorly made particle board POS which buzzed like a beehive when the rig was played 'loud' (it was gutless for its size).

Mind you, the one I had (which I bought back when I knew nothing about amps) was pretty beat up.
