1.
Apparently some guy called Roger Walters plays bass for Pink Floyd. :)
Not to mention Thin Lizzy's legendary Phil Lycott.......

Considering the NME is basically a kiddies comic & fashion magazine I'm really surprised at some of the names on that list.

  2.
In short, if I can't do the gig then I think they should have said 'no' just like we do when either of them can't make a gig.
This is what would make the situation unacceptable for me. They have already set a precedent for the situation; if the band has cancelled gigs before when other members couldn't make the date then why aren't they doing it this time?

I'd be pissed off to the point of quitting (but that's just me; I never really got to grips with "band mentality").

  3.
I used to be a bit of a naysayer, not anymore. I really wish I'd have put the work in a LONG time ago.
Same here.
No excuses, I've just always been very lazy and more than a little intimidated by music theory.
I'm very fired up about learning some theory at the moment, and this is mainly down to the excellent series of lessons that rslaing has been posting the last few weeks.

  4.
And charging in from the leftfield... I Suggest "Babooshka" by Kate Bush.
John Giblin is ripping it up!
+1
"Babooshka" is probably my favourite bass part of all time. Giblin is a fantastic player.
His playing on John Martyns "Grace & danger" album is superb as well.

    Um, nobodies mentioned Jaco yet......
If for some reason you haven't heard Jaco's playing on Joni Mitchells "Hejira" & "Mingus" albums make sure you do. Absolutely wonderful. Personally I think this was Jaco at his very best.

  5.
I had English Garden on vinyl and CD. God knows where it went. Five star album.
    P
It is a great album - one of those records only an English band could make. I've never even seen a CD copy of it.
(It also features a very young Thomas Dolby, whose music I also absolutely love).

  6.
For example, a guy I know came into the shop with a Les Paul copy he'd bought privately. He wanted my opinion, as he'd paid £500 (!) for what was essentially a piece of sh@t.
Buying anything privately if you haven't got much knowledge or experience of musical gear (or anything else for that matter) is asking for trouble. I know a guy in Cardiff that paid serious money for a secondhand Rick 4001 and didn't even know it wasn't supposed to have a bolt on neck; he just saw the Rickenbacker nameplate that had been put on it & bought it.

  7. Pretty much what everyone else has said.
If I could get what I want in a local shop, even if it cost a little bit more, then I would.
Unfortunately the vast majority of music shops have a pretty poor selection of basses unless you're looking for a budget model or a Fender.
All the basses, guitars & keyboards I've bought for years have been online & nearly always secondhand. I've picked up some astonishing bargains & never had any problems whatsoever. I'm in a phase of selling & buying at the moment & it's all being done either on Ebay on Basschat.

  8. Thanks for some great responses.

I've read the Milkowksi book and thought, like most people on this thread, that it was quite well written & didn't really show anybody in a bad light. It was frank and unsentimental about Jaco's mental health problems, but I think the majority of people who were likely to read the book wouldn't have found any of this a great surprise.

It would be interesting to hear the specific reasons behind Methenys derogatory comments.

Out of interest, is the revised version of the Jaco book worth getting if I've only read the first edition?

  9. In the liner notes for the CD reissue of the "Jaco Pastorius" album, Pat Metheny refers to "a horribly inaccurate, botched biography" of Pastorius.
I assume he is referring to the Bill Milkowski biography; does anyone know why Metheny is so scathing of the book, or is he referring to another book I am unaware of?

  10. The legendary 18 string Modulus is in that photo.
That's a 6 string bass with each string having two octave strings. :)

Allan Woody looks like Bob Carolgees from Tiswas in that photo.

  11.
Would certainly make a good pair :)
I know - it's doing my head in.
I can't possibly justify that amount of money for a bass........but it's just so gorgeous.

  12.
You could always plump for the previous version of his sig p-bass, in West Ham colours :)
That first edition of the Steve Harris bass was really very good. They change hands for twice what they originally cost now.
